Automatic vs. Manual Flush Bolts: Why Automatic Is Almost Always the Right Choice
Manual flush bolts require the user to manually retract the head and floor bolts before opening the inactive leaf. Most building users don't know to do this. The result is a paired door where only one leaf gets used, hardware that wears unevenly, and regular service calls. Automatic flush bolts retract when the active leaf opens triggered by a lever connected to the active leaf's contact edge. No user interaction required. Constant Latching Flush Bolts: The Fire Door Specification
On fire-rated paired door assemblies, NFPA 80 requires that the door positively latches when closed. Constant latching flush bolts are spring-loaded to extend automatically when the inactive leaf closes they latch without user intervention. A flush bolt that requires manual operation on a fire door assembly fails the NFPA 80 inspection. Specify constant latching flush bolts on any fire-rated paired door opening.
Flush Bolt Sizing: What to Confirm Before Ordering
Flush bolt height is determined by the distance from the door edge to the head and floor of the door. Standard commercial flush bolts are available in top and bottom configurations sized for door heights from 6'8" to 8'0". For taller doors, confirm the flush bolt extension rod length against the actual door height before ordering. A flush bolt with an extension rod that's too short won't reach the floor strike.
