Single Cylinder vs. Double Cylinder: Which One Is Legal on Your Door?
Single cylinder deadbolts are keyed on the outside with a thumb turn inside. That's the standard for most commercial exterior doors. Double cylinder deadbolts require a key from both sides, which addresses break-in through glass panels where someone could reach through and turn the thumb turn. But double cylinder deadbolts are prohibited by IBC Section 1008.1.9 and NFPA 101 Section 7.2.1.5.2 on any door required for egress. If the door serves as a required exit, it can't have a double cylinder deadbolt, full stop. Check egress requirements before specifying double cylinder on any commercial exterior door.
Why the Strike Plate Matters as Much as the Lock
The ANSI Grade 1 rating on a deadbolt lock body means very little if the strike plate is installed wrong. A standard ANSI F4 strike plate with two 3/4-inch screws into the door stop provides minimal resistance to a kick-in attack. The strike is where most forced entries succeed, not the lock body. A Grade 1 security box strike with 3-inch screws that anchor into the door frame studs is the correct installation for any exterior commercial deadbolt. If you're specifying replacement deadbolts, include the security strike in the same order.
