Are Knob Locks ADA Compliant on Commercial Doors?
No. ADA Section 404.2.7 prohibits knob locks on accessible route doors in new commercial construction. Knobs require grasping and twisting, which people with limited grip strength or mobility can't do reliably. Lever locks are required on every accessible door in new construction and in significant alterations to existing buildings. That's why you don't see cylindrical knob locks in commercial hardware schedules for new projects anymore. They've been replaced by lever locks on every accessible opening.
Where Are Knob Locks Still the Correct Specification?
Non-Accessible Locations in Existing Buildings
Utility closets, storage rooms, mechanical spaces, and secondary doors that aren't on an accessible route can use knob locks in existing buildings where the scope of work doesn't trigger an ADA upgrade. If the door isn't on an accessible means of egress and it isn't in the path of travel for required accessible routes, knob hardware can stay.
Institutional Applications Where Knob Format Is Intentional
Some correctional facilities specify knob locks in non-public areas because lever handles can serve as grip points for climbing or as a prying grip during altercations. Certain psychiatric and behavioral health facilities have similar specifications. In these applications, knob format is a deliberate security decision, not a legacy holdover. BEST 8K Series Grade 1 knob locks with SFIC prep are the standard for this use case.
