How Do You Size a Kick Plate for a Commercial Door?

Kick plate height is typically 10 to 16 inches. Standard commercial is 10 inches for most interior doors, 12 inches for high-traffic corridors where carts hit higher on the door, and 16 inches for service entrances and loading areas. Width is door width minus 2 inches to allow clearance from the door edges, typically between the hinges and the latch side. A 36-inch (3-foot) door gets a 34-inch wide kick plate. For push side only, one plate per door. For both sides, specify two plates. For ADA compliance at accessible entries, the kick plate protects the door surface that wheelchair footrests strike but doesn't change the operating hardware requirements.

Kick Plate vs. Mop Plate vs. Armor Plate: What's the Difference?

A kick plate is 10 to 16 inches tall and protects the door bottom from foot traffic. A mop plate is typically 4 to 6 inches tall and protects the lower few inches of the door from mop and floor cleaning equipment, common in commercial kitchens, janitorial closets, and hospitals. An armor plate runs 30 to 36 inches tall and protects a large portion of the door face from heavy cart and equipment impact. Specify based on the type of abuse the door face will sustain in that specific application.
