Pivot Sets, Top & Bottom
We carry commercial door pivot sets in offset, center-hung, and intermediate configurations from Norton Rixson (Rixson), Ives, Hager, and dormakaba for storefront glass, aluminum entrance, and architectural door applications.
What Is a Commercial Door Pivot and When Does It Replace Standard Hinges?
A commercial door pivot transfers the door's load to the floor and the frame header instead of to the side of the door frame like a standard hinge. Pivot mounting allows the pivot point to sit at any location across the door width not just at the side edge. That's why pivots are the specification for heavy architectural doors, frameless glass entrances, storefront aluminum doors, and any door that needs to swing in both directions or swing at a non-standard angle. Standard hinges can't do any of those things.
Offset Pivot vs. Center-Hung Pivot vs. Intermediate Pivot
Offset Pivots: Position the pivot point 3/4 inch back from the door face edge. The standard configuration for most commercial hollow metal and aluminum storefront doors. Norton Rixson 180 Series top pivot and compatible bottom pivot sets are the most specified for offset applications.
Center-Hung Pivots: Position the pivot axis at the center of the door thickness. The door swings in both directions equally the specification for all-glass frameless doors, high-traffic lobby entrances, and architectural doors where a centered pivot produces the desired visual effect. Center-hung doors require floor closers or special double-action center-hung closers rather than standard overhead closers.
Intermediate Pivots: Mount between the top and bottom pivots to provide additional support on tall or heavy doors exceeding the height or weight capacity of the top and bottom pivot set alone.
Floor Closers and Pivot Door Applications
Most pivot door applications use a floor closer mounted below the door slab, with the closer spindle connecting to the bottom pivot. The top pivot anchors the door at the header with a much lighter load. Norton Rixson 27 and 28 Series floor closers are the most specified for offset pivot configurations. Center-hung applications require the Norton Rixson 30 Series or equivalent bidirectional floor closer.
