Precision CA-03: What a Cylinder Attachment Kit Does on an Exit Device
An exit device ships in one of three configurations from a trim standpoint: with no trim (exit only cover plate), with a full trim assembly including lever or pull, or with a cylinder-only attachment that provides a keyed cylinder mounted directly in the device rail or stile without an escutcheon plate surrounding it. The CA-03 covers the cylinder-only configuration.
On wide style Precision 2000 Series exit devices specified for Function 03 (key retracts latchbolt), the outside entry is provided by key operation only, with no lever handle involved. The CA-03 provides the mounting hardware and bracket that secures a rim cylinder into the device in this configuration, allowing the key to engage the device cam and retract the latchbolt for entry from the exterior.
This configuration is used when the hardware schedule calls for cylinder-only outside access without lever trim, such as on aluminum storefront doors where a lever trim conflicts with the door hardware aesthetic, on doors where the opening width restricts trim installation, or on specific architectural applications where the specifier has intentionally chosen a bare cylinder over an escutcheon trim assembly.

The CA-03 and CA-03T are related but distinct parts in the PHI Precision cylinder attachment family. The CA-03T is used with Precision 4900 Series lever trim, 1700 Series pull trim, and other trim-specific applications on 2000 Series devices (trims 4903, 4908, 1703, 1705, 2003, 2005, 2903, and C03). Why Cylinder-Only Applications Get Specified
Not every exit device opening requires exterior lever trim. Cylinder-only applications come up regularly in several commercial scenarios:
Aluminum storefront glass doors with narrow stile frames where a full lever escutcheon does not fit within the stile width. Service access doors on retail and institutional properties where the opening is primarily for keyed entry by authorized personnel without the need for a decorative lever assembly. Doors on secondary corridors or mechanical spaces where the hardware specification calls for functional access without escutcheon trim for cost or space reasons. Retrofit situations where a previously exit-only device is being converted to a keyed function but trim installation is not practical or approved.
