About this item
The Precision S519 is the top frame strike for Precision Hardware (PHI) vertical rod exit devices. It's a surface-applied strike that mounts to the inside face of the head frame and provides the engagement point for the top latchbolt when the vertical rod exit device is operated. Without the S519 in place, the top rod of the exit device has no strike to engage, and the door doesn't latch securely at the top.
The S519 is manufactured from investment cast stainless steel and finished in black powder coat. It ships as a standard component specification for Precision 2200 and 2800 Series vertical rod exit devices across both surface and concealed configurations.

What a Top Strike Does on a Vertical Rod Exit Device
A vertical rod exit device operates by extending rods simultaneously upward into the head frame and downward into the floor when the pushbar is depressed. When the pushbar is released, both rods extend — the top rod into the S519 and the bottom rod into the S460 floor strike — securing the door at two points.
The top strike is what the top rod latches into when the door closes. It's mounted surface-applied to the door frame head and receives the latchbolt at the correct height. Precise alignment between the rod and the strike is critical for smooth, reliable latching. The S519 is precision cast to maintain consistent tolerances across installations.
S519 (Top) vs S460 (Bottom): Understanding the Strike Pair
Vertical rod exit devices use two strikes: the S519 at the top and the S460 at the bottom. They're different products with different mounting methods because the installation surfaces are different.
The S519 (this product) is surface applied. It mounts directly on the face of the head frame, sitting proud of the frame surface. The top rod engages it from below.
The S460 is flush mounted. It's recessed into the floor at the door threshold, sitting level with the finished floor. The bottom rod engages it by extending downward.
Both strikes are required for the device to function. If either strike is missing, worn, or misaligned, the door won't latch properly and egress security is compromised.
Compatible Precision Exit Device Series
The S519 is the standard top strike for Precision Hardware's 2000 Series vertical rod exit devices. Compatible series include:
Precision 2200 Series: Surface Vertical Rod (SVR) exit devices on wide stile and other door configurations.
Precision 2600 Series: Concealed Vertical Rod (CVR) exit devices for narrow stile applications.
Precision 2800 Series: Concealed Vertical Rod devices across multiple functions.
The S519 is also referenced in BEST brand vertical rod exit device catalogs. Precision Hardware and BEST have shared product lineage under the dormakaba group. If your facility has BEST-branded vertical rod devices and the top strike needs replacement, the S519 is the correct part.
Construction and Material
Investment cast stainless steel: Investment casting is a precise way to make items with the same, exact dimensions and wall thickness every time. The base is made of stainless steel, which protects it from rust and makes it last longer in busy doorways
Black powder coat finish: The powder coat finish is durable, scratch-resistant, and standard across Precision's S-series strike accessories.
Grade 1 certification: Precision 2000 Series devices, including their associated strike components, are ANSI/BHMA certified to ANSI 156.3, Grade 1. The S519 is UL listed for panic hardware and fire exit hardware applications. Devices using the S519 conform to UL10C and UBC 7-2.
