About this item
The Adams Rite 4016 is a header bolt that converts an MS deadlock on a paired door from a single-point to a two-point locking system- and when combined with the 4015 Threshold Bolt, achieves full three-point locking with one key turn. If you searched "adams rite 4016", "adams rite 4016 header bolt", "adams rite 3 point lock", or "adams rite 3 point locking system"- this is the product.
What the 4016 Actually Does: Two-Point and Three-Point Explained
This is the content gap on every competitor page. They all state what the 4016 does, but none explain the point-counting or why it matters. Here is the full picture:
Without the 4016- single-point locking: An Adams Rite MS1850S or MS1950 deadlock on the active leaf of a paired door throws one bolt- the massive laminated stainless steel MS bolt- horizontally into the stile of the inactive leaf. One locking point. One key turn. The top and bottom of the door are not engaged. A determined forced entry attempt can spread or flex the door top or bottom even with the center MS bolt engaged.
With the 4016- two-point locking: A single 360-degree turn of the key or thumbturn simultaneously throws the MS bolt horizontally into the inactive leaf stile AND drives a hexagonal stainless steel bolt upward into the door header. Two locking points from one key operation. The top of the door is now engaged. Prying or spreading the door top has no effect- the header bolt holds.
With the 4016 and the 4015 Threshold Bolt- three-point locking: The same single key turn simultaneously throws the MS bolt horizontally into the inactive stile, the 4016 hexagonal bolt upward into the header, and the 4015 hexagonal bolt downward into the threshold. Three locking points. Top, center, and bottom of the door are all engaged in a single key operation. This is the complete Adams Rite MS three-point locking system- maximum security for paired commercial glass doors from one key turn.
The Hexagonal Bolt: Why This Geometry
The 4016 header bolt is hexagonal- 3/8-inch flat to flat- made of stainless steel. The hexagonal profile is not aesthetic. A round bolt under forced entry pressure can rotate in its strike hole under shear force. A hex bolt cannot rotate- the flat faces lock against the strike geometry and resist rotation under attack. Stainless steel resists corrosion in the header location where moisture can collect over time.
The strike for a metal frame header is simple: a 1/2-inch diameter hole drilled in the metal frame is sufficient. For non-metal frame applications (wood or composite headers), Adams Rite 4005 Strike is available separately- order 4005 when the header frame is not metal.
Compatible Deadlocks and the 7/8-Inch Backset Exclusion
The 4016 is compatible with: Adams Rite MS1850S Series, MS1850SN Series (ANSI size), and MS1950 Series deadlocks. It also works with the 1870 and 1870HM Cylinder-Operated Flushbolt for two-point top and bottom applications.
Not applicable to 7/8-inch backset locks. This is the most important ordering exclusion on this product and the detail every competing page mentions but none explains. The 7/8-inch backset MS deadlock has a shorter case geometry that does not accommodate the linkage rod connection required by the 4016 Header Bolt mechanism. Confirm your deadlock's backset before ordering- the 7/8-inch backset models cannot be upgraded with the 4016.
Door Height Variants: 7-Foot and 10-Foot
The 4016 ships in two door height configurations:
Standard 7-foot version: Designed for doors up to 7 feet (2,133.6 mm) in height. The threaded rod is sized for this height range, with cylinder height coverage as low as 35 inches (889 mm) from the floor- accommodating the range of deadlock mounting heights on standard commercial aluminum storefront doors.
10-foot version: For doors up to 10 feet (3,048 mm) in height- taller commercial storefront openings, high-bay entries, and institutional paired doors with extended frame heights.
The threaded rod that connects the deadlock mechanism to the header bolt is adjustable- exact height adjustment is locked in place by the hexagonal header bolt itself once set. There is no separate set screw required; the hex geometry of the bolt locks the rod position.
How the Single-Key Operation Works Mechanically
The 4016 connects to the existing MS deadlock case via a threaded rod that runs from the deadlock up through the door stile to the header bolt assembly. When the key or thumbturn makes a 360-degree rotation in the MS deadlock, the deadlock's pivot mechanism simultaneously drives: the counterbalanced MS bolt laterally into the inactive leaf stile, and the vertical rod upward, pushing the hexagonal header bolt into the frame strike. Both movements happen in the same single rotation.
The key can only be removed when the bolts are in a fully locked or fully unlocked position- the same positive keying action as the standalone MS deadlock. There is no mid-travel key removal.
4016 vs 4085: Two Options for the Third Point
The Adams Rite catalog also lists the 4085 Header Bolt as an alternative for the third-point-of-locking application. The 4085 provides the top-of-door third locking point when working in conjunction with an MS deadlock and 4015 Threshold Bolt that are already installed in the active leaf. If your installation already has a 4015 and needs a retrofit top point, the 4085 is the relevant part. The 4016 is the standard converter when building the system from a base MS deadlock with no existing multipoint hardware.
