Grade 1 Cylindrical Deadbolts for Commercial Exterior Doors
Commercial cylindrical deadbolts install through a 1-1/8 inch bored hole and provide deadbolt-level security for exterior doors that don't use a mortise lockset with an integrated deadbolt. ANSI A156.30 Grade 1 requirements include a hardened steel bolt with anti-saw pins, minimum 1-inch throw, and forced entry resistance testing. For any commercial exterior door without a mortise lockset, a Grade 1 cylindrical deadbolt is the secondary lock specification.
Single Cylinder vs. Double Cylinder Deadbolts: The IBC Restriction You Must Know
Single cylinder deadbolts use a key outside and a thumb turn inside the standard for most commercial exterior doors. Double cylinder deadbolts require a key from both sides. IBC Section 1008.1.9 and NFPA 101 prohibit double cylinder deadbolts on required egress doors. A door that serves as a required exit path cannot have a double cylinder deadbolt regardless of the adjacent glass panel situation. Verify the door's egress classification before specifying double cylinder it's a code violation on any required egress door.
The Strike Plate Installation That Determines Real Security
A Grade 1 deadbolt with a standard 3/4-inch strike plate provides minimal forced entry resistance. The correct installation uses a security box strike (also called a reinforced or wrap-around strike) with 3-inch screws anchoring into the door frame studs behind the door stop. Without the security strike, the Grade 1 rating on the deadbolt body means nothing for kick-in resistance. Don-Jo and Keedex make the most specified commercial door reinforcers and security strikes for this application.
