BEST 9K Series: The Standard When the Project Is on a BEST SFIC Masterkey Program
The BEST 9K Series Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock is the specification for the majority of US university and hospital system masterkey programs. BEST SFIC is the most installed IC key system in US institutional facilities. The 9K accepts BEST SFIC cores as a standard configuration insert the control key, the core comes out, the new core drops in, the door is rekeyed without removing the lock from the door. Since dormakaba acquired BEST in 2017, you can also specify dormakaba C100 lever locks with BEST SFIC prep for the same IC compatibility. See the BEST brand overview here.
BEST 8K Series Knob Locks: Grade 1 for Non-Accessible Locations
The 8K Series is Grade 1 knob format. ADA Section 404.2.7 prohibits knob locks on accessible route doors in new commercial construction. Knob hardware is specified for non-accessible locations, correctional applications, behavioral health applications, and existing building replacements on non-ADA-required openings where the facility has standardized on knob format. The 6K Series is Grade 2 knob locks for light commercial applications.
BEST 9K vs. Schlage ND vs. dormakaba C100: All Grade 1, Different Masterkey Programs
All three are Grade 1 lever locks with comparable performance. The right choice depends entirely on the campus masterkey program. BEST SFIC program campus: specify BEST 9K or dormakaba C100 with BEST SFIC prep. Schlage SFIC program campus: specify Schlage ND with Schlage SFIC prep. Corbin Russwin IC program: specify CL3 Series with Corbin Russwin SFIC prep. If there's no existing masterkey program, all three are equivalent — choose based on price and local distributor stock.
