What the 9600 Is and Why Narrow Stile Matters

The dormakaba 9600 is the narrow stile concealed vertical rod device in the 9000 Series premium family. The distinction from the wide stile 9100 is not cosmetic - it's architectural. Standard wide stile exit devices require door stiles wide enough to mount the chassis hardware, typically 4-1/2 inches or more. Narrow stile aluminum entrance doors have stiles that run 1-7/8 to 2-1/8 inches in width. A wide stile device physically cannot mount on that geometry.

The 9600 is purpose-built for this constraint. The chassis, touch bar, and rod assembly are engineered to fit inside the stile dimensions of aluminum frame entrance systems - retail storefronts, commercial lobby entries, office building glass entries, and institutional aluminum door systems. The heavy-duty cast chassis carries over from the wide stile 9000 Series, delivering the same Grade 1 durability on the narrow stile platform. Same construction, different geometry.

The Locksmith Ledger notes the 9600 is also a direct retrofit replacement for dormakaba's 5000 Series narrow stile devices and most other manufacturers' narrow stile exit devices, making it the field-service go-to on existing aluminum door installations that need an upgrade.

The One Specification Detail That Cannot Be Missed: The 9600 Is Handed

Every other device in the 9000 Series family - the 9100, 9300, 9400 - is non-handed and field reversible. The 9600 is not. The narrow stile concealed vertical rod configuration is handled and cannot be reversed in the field after installation.

This means handing must be confirmed and specified at time of order. Ordering the wrong hand on a 9600 creates an installation problem that requires returning the device. Before placing any 9600 order, confirm the door handling using the standard four-question method: determine which side the hinges are on, identify the direction of swing, and confirm which hand designation applies.

9600 AA vs 9600 BB: Door Width Determines the Suffix

9600 AA serves doors from 32-1/2 inches to 48 inches wide. The touchpad length is 24-5/8 inches. 9600 BB serves doors from 27 inches to 36 inches wide. The touchpad length is 18-5/8 inches. A CC size exists for additional coverage but is not in the current catalog here.

The "9600/36" model reference appearing in some specifications refers to the BB configuration - the 36-inch door width designation. If a hardware schedule reads "9600/36," the correct order is the 9600 BB.

The bar is designed for aluminum doors with a 1/2-inch blade stop frame. If the door opening is narrower than the standard bar length, the bar can be cut from the rear in the field. Cut the required length from the rear of the touch bar and rail, tape, and cut as shown in the installation template. The door width minus two inches gives the cut dimension for a 34-inch opening as an example.

Dormakaba 9600-K7: Cylinder and Trim Options

The K7 designation appearing in searches typically refers to a 7-pin cylinder configuration specified with the device. The 9600 accepts cylinder dogging with an included mortise cylinder on non-fire-rated applications - specify CD. Cylinder options for outside trim are ordered separately and specified by keyway and pin count when matched to an existing master key system.

ES Electric Latch Retraction on the 9600 BB

The 9600 BB 630 ES in this catalog includes factory-installed electric latch retraction using a solenoid. When energized, the latch retracts to allow credential-controlled entry from the secure side of the door. The ES option is compatible with card readers and key switches providing a normally open contact.

The ES requires the PS-501 power supply and the ES-105 power transfer to get power from the frame to the door. These are sold separately. Without both components, the ES will not function correctly. Confirm the power supply and power transfer are included in the project scope before installing an ES-equipped device.

The MLR (Motorized Latch Retraction) option is also available on the 9600 - the quieter, lower-current motor alternative to the solenoid ES. MLR requires the PS610 or PS532 power supply. For MLR or other electrified 9600 configurations not in the current catalog listing, contact us for availability.

For aluminum door installations, the 9600 requires the NS aluminum door application bracket. Specify NS with the order when the device is going on an aluminum door. For glass lite applications with vision panels in the door, the GK9200 shim kit raises the device from the door surface to clear the glass light molding.
