When the door is closed, there is no visible hardware on the door or frame face from either corridor direction. The track arm connects from the closer body in the frame to a track on the door, and the door operates as a standard closer when hold-open is not active.

When current flows, the electromagnetic hold-open mechanism engages and holds the door open at the set position: infinitely adjustable up to 160 degrees, with templating allowing 180 degrees. When the fire alarm activates or power is interrupted for any reason, the electromagnetic hold releases and the closer mechanism takes over. The door closes under normal rack-and-pinion closer action. This fail-safe behavior is the code requirement for fire and smoke barrier doors: they must close and latch when the fire alarm fires.
