About this item
The LCN 4314ME SF is the surface-mounted, hinge-side Sentronic closer/holder from LCN's 4310ME Series, shipped with the patented Swing-Free arm. If you've been specifying fire and smoke barrier doors and need a closer that holds the door open legally while releasing automatically on alarm, this is the product. It's the standard specification for corridor doors, smoke barrier doors, and fire-rated openings in healthcare, education, and institutional buildings where doors need to stay open for traffic flow but can't be propped open permanently.
How the Sentronic Hold-Open System Works
The 4314ME holds the door open electrically at any position you choose along the door's travel. The hold-open point is infinitely adjustable, not a fixed position. When the electrical current is interrupted, whether by a fire alarm signal, an access control trigger, or a manual release, the electromagnetic hold mechanism disengages and the closer takes over, pulling the door fully closed and latching it. That automatic closing-on-alarm behavior is what makes Sentronic closers the correct specification on doors required by NFPA 101 Life Safety Code to close during a fire event.
When hold-open is not active or current is interrupted, the 4314ME functions as a full rack-and-pinion door closer with standard sweep, latch, and backcheck operation. This is important: the door is never just left unclosed. The closer is always active. The hold-open is an additional function layered on top of normal closer operation, not a replacement for it.
The Swing-Free Arm
The SF suffix in the model number designates the Swing-Free arm, which is LCN's patented solution to a real problem on hold-open fire doors. Without a Swing-Free arm, a door held open by a Sentronic still has full spring tension from the closer acting on it at all times. People pushing the door further open feel resistance and the door wants to return. The Swing-Free arm disengages the closer from its control once the door enters hold-open mode. This means the door can swing freely through a full 160-degree arc with no spring resistance from the closer at all. It's easier to use, less abusive on frames and hardware, and keeps the door stable at whatever angle it's held.
The Swing-Free arm also includes an exclusive "no drift" feature. When the door is placed in hold-open, it stays exactly where it was put. It doesn't slowly creep back toward closed on its own.
4314 Sizing and Mounting
The 4310ME Series is surface mounted on the hinge side of the door, which is the pull side. The "4" in 4314 designates a sized cylinder calibrated for interior doors up to 4'0" wide. Mounting is right or left handed to match the swing of the door. The 4314ME ships complete: closer body on mounting plate, metal cover, Swing-Free arm, track, track roller, and wood and machine screw hardware pack. Voltage options are 24V or 120V. Specify when ordering.
Electrical connections can be either concealed in the door or exposed, depending on the installation. A built-in On/Off switch on the closer body controls the hold-open function independently without requiring a signal from the fire alarm panel, though the closer also interfaces directly with fire alarm systems when that integration is required by the project.
