The scope of the laws and codes can not be covered in this short article, but panic bars compliance is vital to the life and safety of business owners as well as to employees and customers; additionally, the legal and moral ramifications of not complying are far reaching. One important aspect of this code is panic bars. Panic bars are the push bars installed on exit doors to allow quick exiting of buildings. OSHA requires a continuous and unobstructed path of exit to a place of safety. Panic bars provide this quick unrestricted egress. Installed on doors opening to the outside, panic bars are available in several styles. Most come equipped with alarms to prevent people exiting from exiting to steal items or avoid paying a tab. Everyone has seen these doors in commercial buildings such as restaurants, bars, and malls, and other public places like schools and city buildings. Whether constructed horizontally or vertically, all panic bar door openers operate pretty much the same; when one pushes on the panic exit bar the door opens.

Panic exit door bars are available at several price points. The Detex value series, for example, is one top end device. It is quick and easy to install. Constructed of stainless steel, this panic bar is rugged and tamper resistant, has a 100+decibel alarm, and a re-arming feature. The Detex panic door bar has state of the art electronics for reliable security operation with visual and audible indicators, has a back up battery, and a low battery alert. Contact your security and panic door distributor for assistance in choosing the correct panic bar for your evacuation doors. Exit door number and styles guidelines will depend on the size of the building, number of stories, occupancy level, and of course your budget.

To ensure optimal safety in a business or public place, panic bars should be placed on doors. Panic bars prevent entry from the opposite side of a door. On the inner side of the door, they ensure exit in times of emergency. Many countries require exit alarm panic bars to be installed on the doors of public establishments for safety purposes. Panic bars are horizontally placed metal bars placed on an outward opening door. The bar unlatches the door when it is pushed. Panic bars are required on almost all emergency and fire exits, since they can be operated when one is in a panic, i.e. by pushing against the door. The use of panic hardware is regulated by local building codes and the National Fire Protection Association. Requirements for panic bars vary by location, but they must be installed properly in order for them to function properly. Make sure to follow the proper guidelines for installing panic hardware when installing them on commercial doors.

In accordance with the National Fire Protection Agency’s regulations, panic bars and exit alarm devices must be installed in rooms holding more than 50 people, stairwell exits, doors used to exit a building, and any area containing materials that are flammable. There are different types of panic hardware to choose from. Rim devices can be installed easier and require very little maintenance. Panic hardware with surface vertical rods can be a bit more challenging to install, so only advanced professionals should install these. A panic bar with a concealed vertical rod is not only difficult to install but costly as well. Choose the appropriate bar based on the intended use for the panic hardware.

The push pad on a panic bar must be at least half the width of the door itself. When installing the device, use the templates that are including with the bar’s packaging to mark the door to determine where it will be placed. The templates will indicate where the holes should be drilled and where the hardware should be mounted. Generally, the center of the push pad should be 41” above the floor, which is the standard height though that may vary for schools and daycares. Make sure to follow the template when attaching the panic bar to the door. Use only the screws included in the packaging to avoid voiding the warranty of the door. While installing the panic bar, test the push pad to make sure it is functional.

Panic hardware and exit alarm bars are essential in emergency situations. They are especially essential in cases of fire and are crucial in largely occupied buildings. They require very little knowledge to use, which makes them especially useful in situations of panic, since many people loose their train of thought during extreme situations. It is important to install them properly, or have a professional install them. In addition, make sure the panic bars and exit devices follows all federal regulations. Keep regular maintenance of the panic hardware and make sure it is always functioning properly; panic hardware that properly functions can make a big difference in life or death situations.
