About this item
The PHI Precision 4908D-630 is the 4900 Series lever trim with the classroom function: a key from the outside corridor locks or unlocks the outside lever. When locked, the lever is rigid and entry requires a key. When unlocked, the lever operates the exit device latch for free outside entry. Inside, the panic pushpad always allows exit without a key regardless of the lever state. The lever design is D, the finish is 630 Satin Stainless Steel, and the trim is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.3, Grade 1.
This trim is specifically designed for PHI Precision 2000 Series Apex wide-stile exit devices, including the 2100 Series rim, 2200 Series surface vertical rod, and 2700 Series concealed vertical rod configurations. How the 4908 "Key Controls Lever" Function Works
The 4908 function sits between the 4903 (key retracts latch) and the 4914 (no cylinder, always open). With the 4903, a key must be used every single time to enter from outside: key in, turn, latch retracts, enter. With the 4914, the lever operates freely from outside at all times with no security function. The 4908 is different. A single key turn from outside toggles the outside lever between locked and unlocked states. Locked: the outside lever is rigid, key required to retract latch from outside. Unlocked: the outside lever retracts the exit device latch normally for free outside entry without a key on each approach.
This makes the 4908 ideal for classroom doors (lock from corridor, remain locked until unlocked), office suites, and any opening where keyed lockout control is needed without requiring a key for every entry cycle. The inside panic pushpad of the Precision 2000 Series device is always free for egress regardless of the outside trim state.

Lever Designs A, B, C, D: What the Letter Means
The letter after "490" in the PHI Precision 4900 model number designates only the lever shape. A, B, C, and D are four different lever profiles, all structurally equivalent and all available in every function code. The 4908D uses the D lever profile. If your door schedule or building specification calls for a specific lever style, select the corresponding letter. The function (key controls lever), the finish, and all mechanical specifications are identical across all four designs. Choose D if the D lever profile matches adjacent hardware or fits the architectural specification.
4900 Series Function Comparison
The 4902 series is dummy trim: lever present for appearance only, no mechanical connection from outside. The 4903 is key retracts latch: key required every time for outside entry, lever does not operate without key. The 4908 (this trim) is key control lever: key toggles lever between locked and unlocked. The 4914 is always operable: no cylinder, outside lever always active for free passage.
