Precision 1700 Series Pull Trim

Displaying (of 19 products)

The PHI Precision 1700 Series is the pull trim family for Precision Hardware's 2000 Series Apex and Olympian wide-stile exit devices. Pull trim differs from lever trim in its grip geometry: a pull grip is grasped and pulled to operate the latch, rather than rotated like a lever. This makes pull trim the preferred specification on heavy commercial and institutional entries where the door approach directs users to pull, and where the grip profile needs to accommodate ADA hand operation without a lever return spring mechanism. All 1700 Series trims are BHMA certified for ANSI A156.3, Grade 1, through-bolted to the door, and cover both ANSI 161 (A115.2) and 86 (A115.1) door cutout preparations. American Locksets is an authorized PHI Precision dealer stocking the full 1700 Series pull trim catalog with same-day shipping and free shipping on all orders over $300.

Precision 1700 Series Pull Trim: Compatible Devices and Construction

The 1700 Series pull trim mounts on Precision Hardware 2100 (rim) and 2200 (surface vertical rod) Apex and Olympian wide-stile exit devices. The M1700 prefix variants are configured for the 2300 Series mortise exit device. All 1700 trims ship with wrought plates and extruded or cast solid grips, which is the construction standard that separates commercial-grade pull trim from inferior cast-zinc hardware that degrades under sustained use. Grips are extruded or solid cast, not hollow. The wrought plate mounting provides structural rigidity at the through-bolt attachment points that prevents the trim from rotating or loosening under repeated pulling.

The 1700 Series trim is field reversible, which means one trim assembly covers both right-hand and left-hand door configurations. Unlike some competing pull trim families that require factory-handed ordering, the 1700 can be set at installation without a factory return or an additional order.

Three Grip Designs: A, B, and C

The 1700 Series is available in three grip profiles designated A, B, and C. The grip letter is the last character in the base model number and identifies the physical shape of the pull grip only. It does not affect the function. Available grip styles for each function are listed individually below.

1700 Series Functions: How to Read the Model Number

The numeric suffix after the grip letter identifies the trim function. Function determines whether and how the exterior grip can control door latch access.

1701: Exit Only / Cover Plate

The Precision 1701 Apex Exit Only Cover Plate is a cover plate for exit-only openings where no exterior access is provided. The plate covers the door preparation on the exterior face without any mechanical grip. Correct specification for stairwells, emergency exits, and any door where re-entry from the secured corridor is not permitted. Available in 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 625 Bright Chrome, and 630 Stainless Steel.

1702: Exit Only Dummy Trim

The Precision 1702A Pull Trim, Exit Only Dummy, Grip Design A, 1702B-630 Grip Design B, and 1702C-630 Grip Design C provide a physical pull grip on the exterior door face that does not mechanically operate the latch. The grip is present for aesthetics and for users who are accustomed to the pull grip presence, but exterior access is not available. Dummy trim is specified when the building's access control plan calls for controlled re-entry via an access control reader mounted separately, with the trim providing the grip handle but the reader providing the release signal.

1703: Key Retracts Latchbolt

The 1703 function provides keyed exterior access: turning the key directly retracts the latchbolt, allowing entry from the exterior without a thumb piece. This is the standard entry pull trim function for secured commercial entrances where the pull grip and cylinder are the only trim hardware visible on the exterior.

The cylinder is Rim type, not furnished standard. It must be ordered and specified separately.

1705: Key Controls Thumb Piece (Classroom/Night Latch Function)

The 1705 is the thumb piece pull trim with key control: the key locks and unlocks the thumb piece, which retracts the latch when pressed. When the thumb piece is locked by key, it freewheels without retracting the latch. This is the classroom function equivalent for pull trim applications, specified on K-12 classroom entry doors equipped with Precision exit devices where an intruder lockdown function is required without a lever return mechanism.

1715: Thumb Piece Always Active (Passage Function)

The 1715 trim has no cylinder. The thumb piece always retracts the latch when pressed, providing continuous passage from the exterior without key control. This is the passage function for pull trim applications, specified on vestibule entries, lobby doors, and any opening where free passage through the exterior approach is required.

M1700 Series: Pull Trim for the Precision 2300 Mortise Exit Device

When the exit device is a Precision 2300 Series mortise device rather than the 2100/2200 rim or SVR device, the M-prefix version of the 1700 Series is the correct specification. Same grip designs, same function codes, mechanically configured for the mortise exit device architecture.

M1705 (key controls thumb piece) for 2300 Mortise: M1705A, M1705B, M1705C.

M1715 (thumb piece always active) for 2300 Mortise: M1715A, M1715B, M1715C.

Finishes and Retrofit Applications

Available finishes across the 1700 Series include 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 625 Bright Chrome, and 630 Stainless Steel. The R-prefix designation (e.g., R1705A) indicates a retrofit-configured trim factory set to align with other manufacturers' mounting hole locations when used with Precision wide-stile devices. Specify the R prefix at ordering when replacing a non-Precision pull trim with a 1700 Series unit on an existing non-Precision exit device installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What exit devices are the Precision 1700 Series pull trims compatible with?

The 1700 Series is designed for Precision Hardware 2100 and 2200 Series Apex and Olympian wide-stile exit devices. The M1700 Series covers the 2300 mortise exit device.

Q: What is the difference between pull trim and lever trim on an exit device?

Pull trim uses a fixed or thumb-piece grip that is pulled or pressed to operate the latch. Lever trim uses a rotating lever. Pull trim is typically specified on applications where a lever return spring mechanism is not desired or where architectural style calls for a pull grip profile.

Q: What is the difference between 1703, 1705, and 1715 trim functions?

The 1703 uses a key directly to retract the latchbolt for entry. The 1705 uses a thumb piece that the key locks and unlocks for classroom/night latch function. The 1715 has no cylinder and the thumb piece always retracts the latch for free passage.

Q: What are the grip designs A, B, and C on the 1700 Series?

The grip letter designates the physical shape of the pull grip only and does not affect function. A, B, and C are different grip profiles that allow specification to match the architectural design intent of the project.

Q: Is the 1700 Series pull trim handed?

No. The 1700 Series is field reversible and not handed at the factory. The same trim assembly is installed on both right-hand and left-hand doors.

Q: Is the cylinder included with 1700 Series pull trim?

No. Cylinders are Rim type and are not furnished standard. They must be specified and ordered separately.

Q: What finishes are available for the Precision 1700 Series pull trim?

Finishes available include 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 625 Bright Chrome, and 630 Stainless Steel.
