About this item
The Precision KR822-8 is a key removable mullion for double door openings equipped with rim panic exit devices. It converts a double door opening into two independently functioning single door openings, and when the full width of the opening is needed, a key releases the mullion so it can be removed entirely. The mullion reinstalls and re-locks without the key, which means full-width access can be opened and closed in the field by anyone, but the locked-down state requires authorized key operation. American Locksets stocks the KR822-8 in 8-foot height with same-day shipping and free shipping on all orders over $300.
Precision KR822-8 Key Removable Mullion, 8 Ft, for Rim Panic Exit Devices
The KR822 is the key removable version of the standard 822 removable mullion in the Precision/PHI lineup. The standard 822 can be removed manually without any key control. The KR822 adds a key-operated locking mechanism at the mullion cap assembly that prevents the mullion from being removed without the proper rim cylinder key. For commercial and institutional buildings where double door openings need to be secured against unauthorized full-width access, the KR822 is the correct specification over the standard 822.
The KR822-8 is non-fire-rated, for use with rim panic devices. The fire-rated version is the FLKR822, which is UL listed for Fire Exit Hardware and ships with stabilizers standard. If the opening is in a fire-rated wall assembly, specify the FLKR822 rather than the KR822.
Construction and Dimensions
The mullion body is 2 inches wide by 3 inches deep, fabricated from steel. Shipped height is 8 feet (96 inches) for standard 8-foot door openings. For openings less than 8 feet, the mullion can be cut down in the field to the required height. For openings greater than 8 feet, consult the factory before ordering.
The mullion base is investment cast steel, 2 inches wide by 3-1/2 inches deep, and ships with steel anchors for concrete floor installations. The Key Removable Mullion Cap Assembly is investment cast steel. It retrofits directly to the hole pattern of a standard MC822 Mullion Cap, which means an existing 822 or FL822 mullion installation can be converted to a keyed removable configuration by ordering the KMC822 cap assembly separately rather than replacing the entire mullion
Standard finishes are 689 Aluminum and 600 Prime Coat. The prime coat finish is intended for field painting to match the frame or door finish.
Cylinder Requirement
The KR822 does not ship with a cylinder. A rim type cylinder is required and must be ordered separately. The cylinder mounts in the mullion cap assembly and controls the keyed removal function. When specifying the cylinder, confirm it is a rim format cylinder compatible with the Precision/PHI cap assembly hole pattern. If the building is running a master key system, the mullion cylinder can be keyed into the system at time of ordering.
How the KR822 Fits a Double Door Schedule
Most commercial double door openings with rim exit devices need a mullion to create two separate, code-compliant single door openings. The rim device on the active leaf strikes against the mullion or a fixed frame surface, and the passive leaf typically uses surface vertical rods or a dormant device coordinated with the mullion.
The KR822 addresses the common operational requirement where facilities staff need full-width access for furniture delivery, equipment movement, or emergency vehicle access, while the opening must remain secured against unauthorized wide-access use during normal operations. The key removable mechanism solves that without requiring a second set of exit hardware or a separate door coordinator.
The KR822 is compatible with Precision/PHI 2000 and 5000 Series rim exit devices and other brands that use standard mullion strike configurations. Confirm compatibility with the specific rim devices on the project before ordering.
