How the 10G71 Fail Secure Function Works

Power off: outside lever locks. The guardbolt simultaneously deadlocks the latchbolt, preventing shimming or carding. The only way to retract the latch from outside is to insert a key in the cylinder. Access control signal energizes the solenoid: outside lever unlocks, operates normally. Inside lever is always free, no override, no bypass, regardless of power state. The fail secure behavior is mechanical and spring-loaded. Power failure doesn't create a vulnerability window because the lock defaults to the secured state, not the open state.

This is the functional opposite of the 10G70 (fail safe), where power on locks the lever and power off unlocks it. The choice between fail secure (10G71) and fail safe (10G70) is driven by life safety code and security priority for the specific opening.

The standard 10G71 ships with an LA conventional keyway cylinder. SFIC (Small Format Interchangeable Core) is available using the 70 option prefix (2870-10G71).
