Schlage 11-103 Deadlatch: What This Part Is and When You Need It
The 11-103 is a bolt and latch assembly only. It is not a complete lock. It does not include a cylinder, a knob, a lever, a rose, or any exterior or interior trim components. It is the latch cassette that slides into the edge bore of the door and provides the deadlocking latch function for the complete A Series lockset assembly.
The deadlatch bolt has a 1/2 inch throw. Deadlocking means the auxiliary latch pin on the face of the latch cassette deadlocks the latch bolt when the door is fully closed against the strike, preventing the latch from being shimmed, loided, or pushed back from the exterior with a credit card or shim tool. This is a standard security feature on all Schlage A Series cylindrical locks and is the reason the 11-103 is specified as a deadlatch rather than a simple springlatch.
11-103 vs. 11-096: Choosing the Correct Backset
The Schlage A Series deadlatch line uses the part number suffix to identify the backset. The 11-096 is the 2-3/4 inch backset version. The 11-103 is the 3-3/4 inch backset version. The 3-3/4 inch backset is less common than 2-3/4 inch on standard commercial doors but is specified on wider doors, thicker door frames, or specific architectural applications where the lock cylinder centerline must be positioned further from the door edge.
Measuring the backset before ordering is the only way to confirm which part number is correct. Measure from the edge of the door to the center of the existing latch bore hole. If the measurement is 3-3/4 inches, the 11-103 is the correct replacement. If the measurement is 2-3/4 inches, the 11-096 is correct. Installing the wrong backset will result in the knob or lever trim not aligning with the latch and the latch assembly not reaching the strike.

Square Corner vs. Radius Corner: Which Faceplate You Need
The 11-103 uses a square corner faceplate. Square corner means the corners of the 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 faceplate are sharp right angles. Radius corner faceplates have rounded corners. The door prep on the door edge must match the faceplate style. Most commercial hollow metal doors are prepped for square corner faceplates. If the door edge mortise has radius corners, a radius corner latch is required and the square corner 11-103 will not sit flush. Confirm the faceplate corner style on the door before ordering.
