About this item
The Schlage AL40S SAT is a Grade 2 standard-duty privacy lever set built for interior commercial doors where a push-button lock and clean contemporary design are the correct specification. The SAT designation refers to the Saturn lever style: a rounded, smooth lever profile that works across medical offices, hotel guestrooms, office suites, multi-family restrooms, and light institutional applications. If your project calls for a privacy function on a door that staff may need to open from the outside in an emergency, this is the right lock.
How the Privacy Function Works
The AL40S operates on ANSI Function F76, which is the standard push-button privacy used on bathroom and bedroom doors throughout commercial buildings. Press the button on the inside rose to lock the door. The outside lever becomes fixed and the inside lever remains free for immediate exit. To release from inside, turn the inside lever or simply close the door and it resets automatically. From outside, a small screwdriver inserted into the hole in the outside rose retracts the button. This is the emergency override staff use when a guest or patient doesn't respond, not a security bypass, just a quick, tool-assisted entry mechanism designed to be fast and require no key.
This is the correct privacy lever for applications where you don't want a key-lockable deadbolt but you still need a positive lock that resets without a manual unlock step. It's widely used in hotel rooms, medical exam room restrooms, office suite bathrooms, religious facility restrooms, government building restrooms, and anywhere that requires privacy without complex key management.
Saturn Lever Style and ADA Compliance
The Saturn (SAT) lever is a rounded, contemporary profile that sits comfortably in commercial design standards. The lever returns to within 1/2" of the door face, which satisfies ADA accessibility requirements under ANSI A117.1. This matters on any door covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, which includes virtually every commercial restroom. The lever operates without tight grasping or twisting and requires no more than 5 pounds of force to operate.
Construction and Engineering
The AL40S SAT exceeds ANSI A156.2, 1996, Series 4000, Grade 2 requirements, including 400,000-cycle operational testing. The chassis is steel, zinc dichromated for corrosion resistance. The latch bolt is brass with a 1/2" throw. Exposed trim is wrought brass or bronze, with levers in pressure-cast zinc plated to match the finish.
True through-bolting of the door body prevents the chassis from rotating or disengaging from the latch under lateral stress. Cold-rolled steel threaded hubs with locking nuts prevent loosening from repeated use, which is a real-world issue on high-traffic restroom doors that take constant push and pull traffic. Heavy-duty compression springs extend spring cage life, minimize lever droop, and maintain a crisp, fast lever return.
The patented door range adjuster handles door thickness between 1-3/8" and 1-7/8" without any extra parts or hardware orders, making it faster to install on mixed door schedules.
Certifications
ANSI A156.2, 1996, Series 4000, Grade 2. UL Listed for all functions on 3-hour fire doors. ADA compliant. The lock face carries the letter F and the UL symbol to confirm fire-rated listing at point of inspection.
