Why the Schlage ND Series Needs a Spacer on 1-3/8" Doors
The Schlage ND Series chassis is engineered for standard commercial door thickness of 1-3/4". On a 1-3/4" door, both sides of the chassis draw together correctly when the thru-bolts are tightened, the rose plates seat flush against the door face, and the lever returns operate smoothly with proper geometry.
On a 1-3/8" door, which is common on interior wood doors, older residential construction, and some light commercial applications, the standard chassis span is too wide for the door thickness. When you attempt to install an ND lock on a 1-3/8" door without spacers, the chassis cannot fully compress, the rose plates gap away from the door surface, the thru-bolts cannot develop adequate clamping force, and the lever return mechanism operates incorrectly. The lock will function poorly, if at all, and will feel loose on the door.
The XN12-012 spacer fills the 0.180" gap on each side by inserting between the spring cage and the door skin. With both spacers installed, the chassis compression geometry is restored, the rose plates seat flat, and the ND lock functions identically to a standard 1-3/4" installation.
Installation: Where the Spacers Go
Each spacer mounts between the spring cage and the door skin, one on the exterior side and one on the interior side. The chassis adjustment plate on the ND Series should still be set for the standard 1-3/4" door position during installation. The spacers handle the thickness compensation; the adjustment plate does not need to be rotated for 1-3/8" applications when spacers are used. Two spacers total per door, installed before the chassis is assembled through the door.
Included vs Separately Ordered
When a Schlage ND Series lock is factory-ordered specified for a 1-3/8" door thickness, the XN12-012 spacers are included with the lock shipment. When ordering a standard ND lock at 1-3/4" and then encountering a thinner door, or when retrofitting an existing ND installation onto a thinner door, the XN12-012 spacers need to be ordered separately.
