About this item
The S.Parker 954 is a heavy-duty door closer from S. Parker Hardware that works with 36-inch wide exterior doors and 48-inch wide interior doors. It's a rack and pinion action closer with all-temperature hydraulics, two independent speed controls, and a high tensile strength aluminum housing, built for commercial buildings where door weight and traffic frequency demand a heavier closer than the standard Size 3 residential or light commercial units.
S.Parker 954 Size 4: What It Means for Your Application
Door closer spring sizes run from 1 to 6. A Size 4 generates significantly more closing force than a Size 2 or 3 and is the correct specification for heavy commercial entrance doors, oversized interior corridor doors, hollow metal fire doors in busy buildings, and exterior doors exposed to wind pressure. The 953 is the Size 3 unit for medium-duty applications up to 36-inch interior or 30-inch exterior doors. The 954 steps up to cover larger, heavier doors where a Size 3 would struggle to pull the door closed reliably against wind resistance or heavy door weight.
Rack and Pinion Mechanism with All-Temperature Hydraulics
The S.Parker 950 Series uses a rack and pinion mechanism, the industry standard for commercial surface-mounted door closers. The rack converts linear motion from the spring into rotational torque through the pinion gear and output shaft, which drives the arm. This mechanical design provides consistent closing force across the full arc of door travel. The all-temperature hydraulic fluid maintains consistent viscosity from cold winter conditions through summer heat, which prevents the common failure mode of closers that slam in cold weather and drag in heat.
Two-Speed Independent Control
The 954 has two separate speed adjustment screws: one for closing speed and one for latching speed. Closing speed controls how fast the door travels from open to approximately 10-15 degrees before the frame. Latching speed controls the final push that seats the latch bolt into the strike. Adjusting them independently lets the installer set a slow, controlled sweep for the main closing arc and a faster or firmer final latch engagement without compromising the main closing sweep. Both controls can be adjusted at any time after installation with a flathead screwdriver without removing the closer.
Non-Handed and Compatible with National Brand Templates
The S.Parker 954 is non-handed, which means it installs on right-hand and left-hand doors using the same mounting holes without flipping or re-orienting the closer body. The mounting template is identical to several major national brands: the Parker 500, Yale 50, and Norton 1600. Facilities that already have template holes prepared for these brands can install the S.Parker 954 directly into the existing door and frame prep without re-drilling.
