About this item
The S. Parker 954BC is the heavy-duty 950 Series rack and pinion door with an adjustable back check valve built into the housing. When the door opens quickly from wind force or a hard push, the back check valve engages and cushions the swing before the door reaches full open travel, absorbing the energy that would otherwise transfer directly into the frame and adjacent wall.
The 954BC covers doors up to 48" wide for interior applications and up to 36" wide for exterior applications. The housing is high tensile strength aluminum with all-temperature hydraulic fluid, UL listed for use on hollow metal fire-rated doors, and backed by a 10-year manufacturer warranty on trouble-free operation. What Backcheck Does and Why It Matters
Back check is an internal hydraulic valve that creates resistance when the door opens beyond a set point, typically somewhere between 70 and 85 degrees. The resistance is adjustable: tightening the back check valve increases the cushioning force, loosening it reduces it. On an exterior door, a gust of wind can drive the door into the fully open position faster than a door stop can absorb. Without back check, that force transmits through the door arm into the closer body and eventually into the frame. With back check properly adjusted, the valve absorbs the momentum and the door decelerates smoothly before reaching the stop.
Back check is not optional on exterior inswing doors. It's a specification requirement in most commercial door hardware standards for any opening exposed to weather or high wind pressure. It's also recommended on any interior door where occupant traffic patterns mean the door regularly gets pushed hard: emergency exits, service corridors, and high-volume commercial entrances where people push through quickly.

954BC vs. Other S. Parker 950 Series Models
The 950 Series covers four duty levels. The 952 is medium duty. The 953 handles medium/heavy applications for doors up to 36" interior or 30" exterior. The 954BC is the heavy-duty model for doors up to 48" interior or 36" exterior. The 955BC is the extra heavy-duty model for the largest and heaviest doors in the lineup. All BC-suffix models include back check. The 954 (without BC) is the same heavy-duty closer without back check, suitable for interior-only applications where the door isn't exposed to wind loading.
If you've been searching for "parker door closer," "parker model 500 door closer," or "S Parker 954," the 954BC is S. Parker's heavy-duty back check closer and one of the most commonly specified models in the 950 Series for commercial and institutional exterior door schedules.
Two Independent Speed Controls
The 954BC includes two separate speed control valves adjustable at any time after installation with a standard hex key. The closing speed valve controls how quickly the door swings from the open position to approximately 10 degrees from closed. The latching speed valve controls the final 10 degrees where the door needs to close fully and engage the latch. Setting the latching speed slightly faster than closing speed ensures positive latch engagement without slamming, which is the adjustment most commercial door hardware specifications require.
Parallel Arm Bracket Note
The parallel arm bracket is not included with the 954BC and must be ordered separately if parallel arm mounting is required. The standard unit includes the regular arm configuration. The PA954-BC is the factory-packaged version that includes the parallel arm bracket. Specify at time of order if parallel arm mounting is required for your installation.
