About this item
Von Duprin's 94 and 95 Series INPACT exit devices are built into the door, recessed completely within the door's profile with no protruding hardware. The outside trim on those devices needs to match that design philosophy: clean, low-profile, forged brass lever on a 1-3/8" deep escutcheon, through-bolted from inside with no visible exterior fasteners. The 940L is that trim. It's the lever, key locks and unlocks configuration: a key from the outside corridor locks or unlocks the outside lever, the inside of the exit device always allows free egress, and the trim mounts exclusively on the 94 and 95 Series INPACT recessed devices.
The "L" in 940L designates the lever function where key operation toggles the outside lever between locked and unlocked states. This is the function specified for classroom doors, secured office suites, and institutional corridor openings where outside access needs to be controlled by key without a separate deadbolt or additional hardware. How the 940L Lever Function Works
From outside: insert a key in the cylinder and turn to lock the outside lever. The lever becomes rigid. A second key turn unlocks the lever. When unlocked, the outside lever operates the latch normally for entry. From inside: the INPACT exit device push pad always allows free egress regardless of the outside lever state. The inside is never restricted. The 940L trim does not affect the panic egress function of the exit device.
This is the same "key locks and unlocks" concept as a classroom-function cylindrical lock, but applied to an exit device outside trim. It's the correct specification when the door needs panic egress on the inside and key-controlled lever access on the outside.

94 Series vs. 95 Series: What's Different
The 940L fits both the 94 and 95 Series INPACT devices. The two series are mechanically and dimensionally identical. The 94 Series has a smooth mechanism case and the 95 Series has a grooved mechanism case. Both are certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, both are tested to exceed one million cycles, and both are UL Listed as fire exit hardware. If the existing door has a 94 Series device, the 940L fits. If it has a 95 Series, the same 940L fits. The trim is compatible with both without any modification.
940 Trim Family: Other Configurations Available
The 940 trim line includes three function variants for the 94/95 INPACT devices. The 940L (this product) is key locks and unlocks: key required to change outside lever state. The 940L-BE is the blank escutcheon version, always operable with no cylinder, used on non-secured openings where outside entry is always permitted. The 940L-DT is the dummy trim, which pulls when the device is dogged, used on the inactive leaf of a pair of doors. Select the function based on the security requirement for the specific opening.
