About this item
The Von Duprin KR9954 is a keyed removable steel mullion for double door pairs that use rim exit devices. The "KR" designation means the mullion can be fully removed from the opening with a single operation of the mortise cylinder. Once removed, the full width of the double door opening becomes clear — equipment, furniture, gurneys, or oversized inventory can pass through unobstructed. When the mullion is reinstalled, it self-locks back into position without using the cylinder key again.
The KR9954 is prepped for two 499F strikes (for Von Duprin 22-F, 98-F, and 99F rim exit devices) or two 268 strikes (for 88-F devices). Strikes are not included and must be ordered separately. It's an Allegion manufactured product under the Von Duprin brand. American Locksets is an authorized Von Duprin dealer.
What a Keyed Removable Mullion Does and When to Specify It
A standard mullion in a double door opening is fixed in place and can only be removed with tools. The KR9954 replaces that fixed mullion with a key-operated version. A single turn of the mortise cylinder releases the mullion from its locked position and the unit is lifted out. No disassembly, no screwdrivers, no hardware removal.
This capability is specified in facilities that regularly need full double-door width clearance: hospitals moving large medical equipment, retail stores receiving oversized fixtures, warehouses moving pallet loads, schools or gymnasiums delivering large items. Once the move is complete, the mullion drops back into its top fitting and self-locks. The key is only needed to remove it, not to reinstall it.
Strike Compatibility: 499F vs 268
The KR9954 comes factory-prepped for two strike configurations, but only one can be used per installation:
499F strikes: Specified with Von Duprin 22-F, 98-F, and 99F surface rim exit devices. The 499F is the standard surface-mounted strike for the 98/99 Series — the same series this mullion is most commonly paired with.
268 strikes: Specified with Von Duprin 88-F devices. The 268 strike serves a different exit device series and is not interchangeable with the 499F.
Confirm which exit device series is installed on the door pair before ordering the strike. The mullion body is the same regardless of which strike variant is used — the prep holes accommodate both configurations.
