The ABUS 83S-IC/45 LFIC SCHLG is a hardened steel padlock from the ABUS 83 Series, prepped to accept Schlage Large Format Interchangeable Core cylinders. What SCHLG Means on an ABUS Padlock

The SCHLG designation tells you the padlock body is prepped for Schlage Large Format Interchangeable Core (LFIC) cylinders  the specific bore geometry, retainer configuration, and core engagement format that Schlage LFIC cores require. ABUS makes the 83 Series IC padlock in multiple IC formats: LFIC for large format cores (like Schlage) and SFIC for small format cores (like BEST). You cannot interchange these formats. The SCHLG version accepts Schlage LFIC cores only. If your facility runs Schlage LFIC throughout your building  in locksets, exit devices, and cylinders  the 83S SCHLG allows those same cores to extend directly into padlock applications with no separate key system.

LFIC vs SFIC: Why It Matters for This Padlock

Large Format Interchangeable Core (LFIC) and Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) are two distinct IC standards with different physical dimensions. They are not interchangeable. Schlage uses LFIC as their primary IC format. BEST uses SFIC. If your building runs Schlage, specify LFIC. If it runs BEST, specify SFIC. The 83S-IC/45 LFIC SCHLG is the Schlage LFIC version. Ordering the wrong IC format means the core won't fit.

What "83/45" Means in the Model Number

The 83 is the ABUS product series  ABUS's flagship rekeyable padlock family and one of the most widely deployed commercial padlocks in the world. The 45 is the padlock body width in millimeters  45mm, which is approximately 1-3/4 inches. This is the standard commercial body size in the 83 Series. Larger body widths (50, 53, 55mm) are available in other 83 Series variants, but the 45mm is the most commonly specified for general commercial and institutional applications.

Hardened Steel Body and NANO PROTECT Coating

The 83S body is chrome-plated hardened steel. The S in 83S designates the hardened steel body  distinguishing it from the 83 brass body version. For applications where physical attack resistance matters, hardened steel provides substantially better resistance to cutting, prying, and drilling than standard steel or brass. The NANO PROTECT coating adds an additional layer of corrosion protection beyond the chrome plating  relevant for outdoor applications, coastal environments, and any installation where moisture and corrosion are ongoing concerns.

The Z-Bar: Two Functions in One Padlock

The patented ABUS Z-bar is what makes the 83S-IC/45 a 2-in-1 padlock. In the standard configuration, the padlock has automatic locking  push the shackle down and it locks without a key. The key is only required to open. Insert the Z-bar and the padlock converts to key-retaining mode  the shackle locks only when a key is used to lock it, and the key cannot be removed until the padlock is fully locked. This prevents the padlock from being left unlocked unintentionally in key-retaining mode. Switching between modes takes seconds.

Double Stainless Steel Ball Shackle Locking

The shackle on the 83S-IC/45 locks via a double stainless steel ball deadlocking mechanism. Two hardened steel balls engage the shackle simultaneously on both sides of the shackle heel, providing high resistance to both tensile (pulling) and torsion (twisting) attacks. Single ball locking mechanisms are weaker because the shackle can be leveraged laterally to disengage the single ball  double ball deadlocking prevents that lateral movement.

Easy Shackle Change

The 83S-IC/45 includes ABUS Easy Shackle Change compatibility. The shackle can be swapped for a different height or material using ABUS's Easy Shackle Change tool. Shackle height options include 1-3/16 inch, 2-1/2 inch, 3 inch, and 4 inch. This means you don't have to stock multiple padlock bodies for different clearance requirements  one padlock body covers multiple shackle height applications.
