About this item
The Accentra 5308LN is the Grade 2 classroom function lever lock from Yale's 5300LN Series. If you searched "yale classroom lock", "accentra locksets", "accentra yale knob locks", "how to open without key", "yale commercial locksets", or "yale accentra locks" -this is the product. Accentra is the current brand name for Yale commercial hardware under ASSA ABLOY. The 5308LN model number, function, and compatibility carry forward directly from the Yale catalog.
ANSI F84 Classroom Function: Exactly How It Works
The 5308LN function is ANSI F84 -the classroom lock function used in schools, universities, healthcare facilities, and commercial spaces where a teacher, administrator, or security staff member needs to lock a door quickly from inside without a key.
Here's the precise sequence: both levers operate the latchbolt freely when the lock is unlocked -anyone can enter or exit normally. When a key is inserted from outside and turned, the outside lever locks in place. From that point, the outside lever cannot retract the latch -the door cannot be opened from outside without a key. The inside lever remains fully active at all times. The person inside can still exit freely regardless of the locked state. This is the defining code requirement for classroom locks -inside egress is always free, even when the room is locked down.
A second key turn from outside releases the outside lever back to normal operation. The inside lever never locks, never requires a key, and cannot be made inoperative.
"How to Open Without Key": What the Free Wheeling Lever Does
If you searched "how to open without key" and landed here -the Accentra 5308LN does not have an emergency release or override on the outside like a privacy lock does. The classroom function is key-controlled from outside only. There is no coin slot, no pinhole, and no override button on the outside rose. The only way to retract the latch from outside when the lock is engaged is with the correct key.
The free wheeling lever is the vandalism detail, not an override. When the outside lever is locked, it rotates freely up and down rather than freezing in place. This prevents forced entry through lever manipulation -there is no rigid lever to torque against the lock mechanism. The lever rotates harmlessly while the latch stays retracted only by key. If you are locked out without a key, a locksmith with the correct key or a facility master key is required to open the door.
Sold Less Cylinder: What You Need to Order
The 5308LN ships less cylinder -the lockset body, levers, latch, and all hardware are included, but the cylinder is not. This is by design. Schools and institutions run master key systems, and the cylinder must be keyed to that system before installation. Ordering less cylinder lets the facility specify exactly the cylinder and keying they need.
Cylinder options available at American Locksets for the 5308LN:
Standard conventional cylinder -1802 or compatible, PARA or G-series keyways, combinated to your key system by a locksmith or distributor before installation.
B prefix (SFIC prep) -the B-5308LN variant accepts Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) for BEST-format IC systems. The core drops in with a control key.
SI prefix (Schlage IC prep) -accepts Schlage Large Format IC cores for Schlage LFIC systems.
M prefix (Medeco/ASSA IC prep) -accepts Medeco and ASSA interchangeable cores for high-security key systems.
5308LN vs Other 5300LN Functions: Choosing the Right Lock
The 5300LN platform covers multiple ANSI functions. The most commonly compared to the 5308LN classroom:
5307LN (ANSI F109) -entrance/office function. Outside lever locked or unlocked by key. Inside thumbturn controls outside lever from inside. Both sides can be locked and unlocked. Not a classroom function -does not meet classroom security requirements in most codes.
5305LN -storeroom function. Outside lever always locked -key always required to enter. Inside lever always free. No ability to toggle locking state from outside key. Correct for server rooms, supply rooms, and storage where entry should always require a key.
5308LN -classroom function. Key from outside toggles locked/unlocked state. Inside always free. Correct for classrooms, exam rooms, and offices where the occupant needs the ability to lock the room from inside in an emergency.
