About this item
The Accentra 5401LN is the Grade 1 passage lever set from Yale's 5400LN heavy-duty cylindrical lockset series. If you searched "accentra levers", "yale passage lever", "yale 5401ln", "accentra yale lever locks", or "show picture" -this is the product. Accentra is the current brand name for Yale commercial hardware under ASSA ABLOY. The 5401LN model number and specifications carry forward directly from the Yale catalog.
What the 5401LN Passage Function Does
The 5401LN function is ANSI F75 -passage or closet latch. Both levers operate the latchbolt at all times. There is no locking mechanism, no key, no pushbutton, and no thumbturn. Either lever retracts the latch from either side of the door on every use. The door stays closed and latched when released, but anyone can open it from either side without a key or any unlocking action.
This is the correct specification for conference rooms, corridors, copy rooms, break rooms, internal office doors, and any commercial or institutional opening that requires controlled door closure and latching -but not controlled access. The latch keeps the door from standing open while allowing free traffic through.
Show Picture: What the Three Lever Styles Look Like
If you searched "show picture" -the 5401LN is available in three distinct lever designs with different visual profiles. Every lever is non-handed, ADA compliant, and available in all finishes.
Augusta (AU5401LN) is the institutional standard. A gently curved lever arm with a traditional downward sweep -the classic commercial lever silhouette you recognize in office buildings, schools, and government facilities across North America. Clean, durable, understated. It coordinates with virtually any hardware schedule without drawing attention to itself.
Monroe (MO5401LN) is the contemporary midpoint -a slightly swept lever with a more architectural profile. More refined than the Augusta without being aggressively modern. Common in corporate offices, hotels, and commercial interiors where the hardware is expected to complement a more designed space.
Pacific Beach (PB5401LN) is the most modern of the three -a straighter, nearly horizontal lever with a minimal cross-section and clean geometric lines. Specified in contemporary commercial and institutional projects where modern design language runs throughout the hardware schedule.
All three lever designs can be ordered knurled on request -a textured surface that makes the lever identifiable by touch for visually impaired users where local code requires it.
5401LN vs 5301LN: Grade 1 vs Grade 2
The 5401LN and 5301LN are both passage levers in the same function -ANSI F75 -but they are not the same product. The 5301LN is the Grade 2 version in the lighter-duty 5300LN Series. The 5401LN is the Grade 1 version in the heavy-duty 5400LN Series.
The 5400LN carries heavier internal construction throughout: wear-resistant chassis plates on the lock body, longer thread-locking thrubolts that resist loosening from vibration and hard use, heavy-duty lever return springs warrantied for life, and a stainless steel latchbolt. The 5400LN chassis components are thicker-gauged and built for institutional traffic levels -schools, hospitals, government facilities, and commercial buildings with high daily door cycle counts. The warranty on the 5400LN is seven years on the mechanical components vs five years on the 5300LN. For high-traffic openings, the 5401LN is the correct specification. For light-to-medium commercial interiors, the 5301LN passage lever covers the application at lower cost.
Heavy-Duty Construction Details
The 5400LN platform has four construction details that set it apart from standard commercial levers and that no competing product page mentions:
Wear-resistant chassis plates are hardened inserts at the high-friction points inside the lock body -where the spindle, hub, and latch components contact the chassis. Standard commercial locks use uncoated steel at these contact points, which wears over millions of cycles. The hardened inserts in the 5400LN maintain tighter tolerances for longer service life.
Thread-locking thrubolts are the long machine screws that pull the two rose assemblies tight against both faces of the door. Standard thrubolts can back out over years of door slam cycles and vibration. The 5400LN uses a thread-locking compound on these bolts so they stay torqued to spec over the life of the lock.
Free wheeling lever trim is the vandalism resistance feature -on all locking functions in the 5400LN line (not applicable to this passage function, but relevant across other 5400LN products), when the lever is locked it rotates freely rather than freezing rigidly in place.
Patented adjustable rose support plates allow the 5400LN to adjust from 1-3/4 to 2 inches door thickness at installation without special order. For 1-3/8-inch doors, two spacer plates (part 14-5401-6644) adapt the rose to the thinner door.
