About this item
The Accentra Yale 690F is a fail-safe electrified escutcheon lever trim from the Accentra 600 Series heavy-duty exit trim platform, designed for use with compatible Accentra and Yale 7000 Series rim, SquareBolt rim, and surface vertical rod exit devices. Also referenced as the Yale 690F from the legacy Yale Security brand. American Locksets is an authorized Accentra ASSA ABLOY dealer stocking the 690F with same-day shipping and free shipping on orders over $300.
Accentra Yale 690F: How Fail-Safe Electrified Exit Trim Works
The 690F is fail-safe. Fail-safe means the lever is locked when power is on and unlocks when power is removed. This is the opposite of fail-secure.
When the system is powered and the door is secured, the lever operates in a free-wheeling mode. Turning the lever does not retract the latchbolt and does not allow entry. The inside panic bar remains active for egress at all times, independent of power state, which is the required life-safety behavior on all exit devices.
When power is cut, the lever becomes fully operational from the outside. This means a power outage automatically unlocks the exterior lever and allows entry. This is the defining characteristic of fail-safe and the reason it is specified on stairwell tower doors, high-security areas requiring fail-open access control, and doors tied to fire alarm or emergency systems where the design intent is to allow entry upon alarm activation.
Fail-safe is the correct specification when the design calls for exterior lever locking during normal operations that automatically releases during power loss or alarm events. If the design requires the door to remain locked during power loss, the 691F fail-secure trim is the correct specification.

690F Fail-Safe vs. 691F Fail-Secure
The 690F is fail-safe: lever locks when powered, unlocks on power loss. The 691F is fail-secure: lever is free-wheeling when unpowered and activates for entry when power is applied. Confirm the correct fail mode with the access control design and the authority having jurisdiction before ordering. These two functions cannot substitute for each other on a completed hardware schedule.
