About this item
The Cal-Royal ESC4400 is heavy-duty escutcheon lever trim with rigid (non-clutch) mechanism, designed to mount on the outside locked side of a door equipped with a Cal-Royal 4400 Series rim or surface vertical rod exit device on the egress side. This is exit device trim, not a complete lock: the panic exit device on the inside handles all egress, and this trim provides key-controlled outside entry on the locked side. ANSI Function (08) Classroom: a key locks or unlocks the escutcheon trim, so the outside lever can be manually switched between locked (key required for entry) and unlocked (free entry) states using the cylinder, while inside egress remains unimpeded at all times through the paired panic exit device. Through-bolted assembly with hardened steel heavy-duty tailpiece resists lever pull-off attacks and forced entry. Non-handed and easily field-reversible: one trim works for both right-hand and left-hand door installations without ordering different parts or stocking handed inventory.
Where the ESC4400 Fits in Cal-Royal's Exit Device System
Cal-Royal Products is a U.S. commercial hardware manufacturer (Los Angeles, in business since 1986) supplying value-engineered architectural hardware that meets the same ANSI/BHMA standards as Von Duprin, Yale, Sargent, and Corbin Russwin at a meaningfully lower price point. Within Cal-Royal's exit device lineup, the 4400 Series is the Grade 1 wide-stile rim and surface vertical rod panic exit device family, specified for heavy-traffic institutional and commercial applications: schools, hospitals, government buildings, multi-tenant office buildings, and high-volume retail. The ESC4400 is the matching escutcheon-style lever trim for that 4400 Series, providing key-controlled entry from the outside while the panic device handles egress from the inside. For the broader Cal-Royal panic exit device lineup see Cal-Royal Devices. For other Cal-Royal exit device trim configurations including the mechanical pushbutton code variant, see Cal-Royal Exit Device Trims within Exit Device Trims & Mullion under Exit Hardware.
ESC4400 Specifications and Cylinder Compatibility
ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 strength and operational requirements (1,000,000+ operating cycles, vertical/horizontal load resistance, impact resistance for heavy-traffic institutional and commercial applications). Function: ANSI (08) Classroom (key locks or unlocks outside trim, allows manual switch between locked and unlocked states without removing trim from door). Mechanism: rigid, non-clutch (lever transmits force directly to latch retraction with no slip). Compatible exit device: Cal-Royal 4400 Series rim and surface vertical rod. Escutcheon: 2-3/4" width × 8-1/2" length. Lever: 4-3/4" length, contemporary straight-arm profile. Cutout: fits and covers 2-1/8" 161 prep. Trim assembly: through-bolted with hardened steel heavy-duty tailpiece. Handing: non-handed, field-reversible.
The ESC4400's most distinctive specification is cylinder compatibility, which is broader than almost any other exit device trim in this price tier. Standard configuration ships with a 6-pin solid brass Schlage C keyway mortise cylinder. Optional cylinder configurations the trim accepts include: Schlage E, Schlage C-K, Russwin D1, D2, D3, D4, Corbin 59/60 (the variant searched as "4400 / 60"), Sargent LA, LB, LC, Falcon/Weiser E, Arrow 1C, Yale 8, Yale GA, and Kwikset. The trim also accepts Medeco, Assa, and Kaba high-security cylinders for restricted-keyway applications (government, financial, biotech, R&D facilities). This breadth makes the ESC4400 the right choice for facility managers consolidating multiple buildings or campuses under an existing keying system -whatever the building's master key system, this trim almost certainly accepts a compatible cylinder without requiring the buyer to switch the entire facility's keyway.
Two interchangeable core options are also supported: (IC) Small Format accepts 6-pin and 7-pin BEST, FALCON, and ARROW SFIC cores (less core); (ICSC) Large Format accepts Schlage Full Size Format Interchangeable Core (less core). Both options ship the trim without a core installed, allowing the buyer to use existing facility cores from the Best, Falcon, Arrow, or Schlage SFIC/LFIC system.
Available Finishes
Two BHMA-coded finish options:
-
26D Satin Chrome (BHMA 626) -the most-specified commercial finish across institutional and commercial doors
-
Duro Dark Duranodic (BHMA 690) -anodized dark bronze finish suitable for storefront aluminum frames and contemporary commercial architecture
When to Specify the ESC4400
Three buyer scenarios point specifically to the ESC4400:
-
Heavy-traffic institutional retrofits and new construction where the door already has or will have a Cal-Royal 4400 Series rim or surface vertical rod panic exit device. Schools, hospitals, multi-tenant office buildings, government buildings, and retail back-of-house openings where ANSI Grade 1 cycle life is required.
-
Facility consolidation under an existing keying system where the building's existing keyway is anything other than Schlage C, and finding compatible exit device trim has been a multi-vendor sourcing problem. The ESC4400 accepts 12+ keyway options out of the box, eliminating the need to re-key the existing master system.
-
Classroom function applications where staff needs to manually switch the outside trim between locked and unlocked states throughout the day. School classrooms (locked when staff leaves, unlocked when class is in session), conference rooms, doctor's offices, professional service offices, retail back-of-house, and any opening where access alternates between restricted and unrestricted on a daily schedule.
If the application requires code-restricted entry instead of key entry, see the Cal-Royal CRCODE204 Storeroom Pushbutton Lever Trim for the mechanical pushbutton variant. If the door uses a different brand of exit device, see compatible alternatives by brand: Corbin Russwin L9/N9 Lever Trim, Corbin Russwin A9/C9/PR9 Lever Trim, Corbin Russwin TH9 Thumbpiece Trim, Corbin Russwin P9 Pull Trim, Corbin Russwin N9M Lever Trim for ED5600 Mortise, Corbin Russwin TH9M Thumbpiece for ED5600 Mortise, Imperial LHL-500 Entry Lever Trim, or Imperial LHL-510 Passage Lever Trim.
