How the NEWSH140 Spring Hinge Works

The NEWSH140 is a single-acting spring hinge, meaning the spring mechanism automatically returns the door to the closed position after opening. The tension is field-adjustable using the tension adjustment pin built into the barrel. For a standard commercial door installation requiring self-closing action on a fire door, two spring hinges replace the top and bottom butt hinges, while a standard ball bearing hinge occupies the middle position. This three-hinge configuration (two NEWSH140 spring hinges and one ball bearing hinge such as the Cal-Royal BB31) is the typical spec for 3'0" x 7'0" wood or hollow metal doors in institutional applications.
