Full Mortise vs. Half Surface vs. Full Surface: Which Hinge Type for Your Door? 

 

Full mortise hinges have both leaves recessed (mortised) into the door and frame. The hinge sits flush with both surfaces. This is the standard for commercial hollow metal and wood doors manufactured with mortise hinge prep from the factory. Half surface hinges have one leaf mortised (typically into the frame) and one surface-mounted (typically on the door face). Used when the door can't be mortised, such as some retrofit applications. Full surface hinges have both leaves surface-mounted on door and frame faces. Used when neither the door nor the frame has mortise prep. Full surface is the retrofit option when you're replacing hinges on existing doors that weren't mortised.
