About this item
The Hager BB1199 is the heavyweight version of the Hager full mortise five-knuckle ball bearing commercial hinge. At 0.180-inch gauge, it carries more metal in the hinge leaf than the standard weight BB1191 (0.146 gauge). That extra gauge translates to a stiffer leaf that resists flex and distortion under sustained door weight, which is why this hinge is specified on heavy solid wood doors, heavy hollow metal doors, and high-frequency entrance doors where a standard weight hinge would wear out early.
Four ball bearings rather than the two found in many commercial ball bearing hinges. The four-bearing arrangement distributes the door weight more evenly along the pin and reduces friction throughout the swing cycle. Heavy doors with frequent daily openings wear standard ball bearing hinges faster. The BB1199's four-bearing construction is built for those conditions.
The body is available in two base materials: brass with a stainless steel pin (ANSI A2111) or stainless steel with a stainless steel pin (ANSI A5111). The stainless steel pin on both variants is the rust-resistant core of the product. Even on the brass body version, the pin itself is stainless steel, which is the component that most commonly corrodes or seizes on exterior-adjacent doors exposed to humidity and condensation. BB1199 vs BB1191: Heavy Weight vs Standard Weight
Both the BB1191 and BB1199 are five-knuckle full mortise ball bearing hinges in brass or stainless steel with stainless steel pins. Both are in Hager's rust-resistant line. The physical difference is gauge and bearing count.
The BB1191 (standard weight) uses 0.146-inch gauge metal and two ball bearings. It's the correct specification for standard commercial interior and exterior doors in normal-duty applications.
The BB1199 (heavy weight, this product) uses 0.180-inch gauge metal and four ball bearings. It's the correct specification for doors over standard weight, high-cycle entrances where the door is opened hundreds of times per day, and any opening where the hardware schedule specifies heavy weight hinges. Specify BB1199 when the door weight or frequency of use would shorten the service life of a standard weight hinge.
