Why Cam Profile Determines Whether Your Mortise Cylinder Will Work
The cam is the small rotating piece at the rear of the cylinder that engages the lock body's tailpiece. When the key turns, the cam rotates and drives the tailpiece, which retracts the latch. Each manufacturer uses a proprietary cam profile: different rotation angle, different cam depth, different throw distance. A Schlage cam profile doesn't engage a Sargent tailpiece correctly even if you can physically get the cylinder into the housing. The cylinder will either not turn, not fully retract the latch, or lock the mechanism entirely. Always order mortise cylinders from the same manufacturer as the lock body. If you're substituting brands, get explicit cam compatibility confirmation from both manufacturers before ordering.
