About this item
The Accentra 2196 is the 1-1/2" large format interchangeable core (LFIC) mortise cylinder from the Yale/Accentra cylinder line, built for the Accentra 8800 Series mortise locks and Sargent mortise hardware. If you've been searching for the 2196 cylinder, 2196/6 (the 6-pin version), or the Yale mortise IC cylinder for an existing door hardware system, this is the part. Yale commercial hardware was rebranded as Accentra. The product, part numbers, dimensions, and cam geometry have not changed. The 2196 you're specifying today installs into the same mortise lockcase as the Yale 2196 you've been using on previous projects.
What LFIC Means and Why It Matters
LFIC stands for Large Format Interchangeable Core. This is Accentra/Yale's IC format for mortise cylinders, where the core itself can be removed from the housing using a control key and replaced with a new core, without taking the cylinder or lock apart. In a building with dozens or hundreds of Accentra/Yale mortise locks on an LFIC masterkey system, a locksmith or facilities manager can rekey any door in under a minute. The control key rotates the core to the removal position, the core slides out, and a new pre-keyed core drops in. No cylinder disassembly, no removal from the door, no downtime on the opening.
This makes the 2196 the correct specification for any facility that runs an ongoing key management program, has regular tenant turnover, handles move-ins and move-outs, or needs rapid rekeying after a security event. Hotels, hospitals, university housing, and large commercial campuses all rely on LFIC systems for exactly this reason.
The 2160 Cam
The 2196 uses the 2160 cam, which is the standard Sargent/Yale cam type. This cam geometry is correct for Accentra (Yale) mortise locks and Sargent mortise locks that accept the Yale cam specification. Confirm your lockcase cam requirement before ordering. If the lockcase uses a different cam, a different cam suffix may be required.
6-Pin vs Other Pin Counts
The 2196/6 designation means the 6-pin version of the 2196 cylinder. Accentra offers LFIC mortise housings in both 6-pin and 7-pin configurations. The 6-pin 2196 is the standard specification for most commercial and institutional Accentra/Yale mortise lock installations. If your masterkey system or specification calls for 7 pins, confirm before ordering.
Keyways and Keying Options
The 2196 is available in a wide range of Yale/Accentra keyways including PARA, GA, GB, GC, GD, GE, GF, GH, SA, SC, SF, TF, TH, and others. Most keyways ship 0-Bitted, meaning the core is uncut and ready to be keyed by your authorized key system dealer or locksmith. The PARA keyway and GA keyway are also available Keyed Different (KD) or Keyed Alike (KA) if pre-cut cores are required for your application. Specify keyway and keying option when ordering.
Finishes
Available in 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 613 Dark Oxidized Satin, 625 Bright Chrome, and 626 Satin Chrome to match the trim finish on your Accentra or Sargent mortise hardware. Note that finish 613 carries no finish warranty per Accentra's standard terms.
The Yale to Accentra Brand Transition
If you've been specifying Yale cylinders and are now seeing Accentra on product labels and invoices, the cylinders are the same product from the same ASSA ABLOY manufacturing. Part numbers, keyways, cam specs, and core compatibility across your existing system have not changed. The 2196 drops directly into any opening that previously took a Yale 2196.
