About this item
The Sargent 866-PTB is a keyed thumbpiece pull trim for Sargent 8700, 8800, and 8900 Series exit devices. It mounts on the outside face of the door and provides key-controlled access from the pull side of an opening equipped with a panic bar or exit device on the push side. The PTB (Pull Trim, Thumbpiece B design) uses a thumbpiece mechanism — a vertical pull handle with a key cylinder that controls whether pressing the thumbpiece retracts the outside latchbolt. It's an ASSA ABLOY manufactured product under the Sargent brand. American Locksets is an authorized Sargent dealer.
What a Thumbpiece Pull Trim Does
Exit devices allow free egress from inside by pushing a bar or touchpad. Outside access requires trim. The 866-PTB is the trim piece that mounts on the frame-mounted escutcheon and gives authorized users key-controlled entry from outside. When the thumbpiece is unlocked (key in the cylinder), pressing it down retracts the latch from outside and allows the door to open. When the thumbpiece is locked, the outside pull doesn't operate and the door can only be opened from inside.
This is the hardware specified for classroom security, storeroom, and commercial entrance applications where the push side has an exit device and the pull side needs keyed access for authorized entry.
Functions and Compatible Panic Devices
The 866-PTB trim supports two Sargent exit device functions, and the physical trim is identical across both. Selection depends on the exit device being paired:
Function 63 (on 8863 exit devices): Key outside unlocks and locks the thumbpiece. When unlocked, pressing the thumbpiece retracts the latchbolt for entry. This is the classroom/storeroom configuration.
Function 66 (on 8866, 8966, and WS8966 exit devices): Key outside retracts the latch directly. A second inside cylinder unlocks and locks the outside trim for controlled access hours. This is the entrance configuration used on commercial main entries and lobbies.
Compatible exit devices: Sargent 8866, 8966, 87634, 8363, and WS8966 panic devices. The WS8966 is Sargent's Wide Stile 8966 Series — a rim exit device with a wide stile touchpad for wide-stile aluminum frame doors.
Cylinder and Keying
The 866-PTB ships with a cylinder on LA standard keyway. For Function 63 operation (8863 device), a #34 cylinder is used on the outside trim. For Function 66 operation (8866/8966/WS8966 devices), a #34 cylinder is used outside and a #44 cylinder inside, allowing separate control of entry and lockdown functions.
The cylinder can be masterkeyed into any Sargent key system or grand master key hierarchy. Construction keying is available for projects that need temporary access during construction with a re-key upon occupancy.
Through-Bolt Mounting and Handing
The 866-PTB uses through-bolt mounting that passes through the chassis of the exit device and bolts directly to the trim. This design ensures precise alignment of the center case, thumbpiece, and cylinder, which matters for reliable operation over thousands of cycles in high-traffic openings.
The trim is handed — specify RHR (Right Hand Reverse, pull side right-hand) or LHR (Left Hand Reverse, pull side left-hand) on order. It's field reversible, so it can be re-handed at the job site if handing changes during construction.
Door thickness: 1-3/4" standard.
Applications
Schools and universities (classroom security function — teacher can lock outside entry without leaving the room). Commercial office buildings (entrance function — reception controls outside lever from inside). Government facilities and healthcare where secure room entry is required with panic egress compliance. Any opening with a Sargent 8800 or 8900 Series exit device where outside keyed access is needed.
