What ALX10 Means
The model number tells you the function. ALX is the series. "10" is the passage function code- ANSI F75. Passage means both levers are always free to retract the latch from either side, with no keying and no locking function. The Athens (ATH) suffix designates the lever style. This is the correct lock for interior commercial corridor doors, connecting office doors, and any opening that needs free bidirectional traffic without any access control requirement.
The ALX Series: What Changed from the AL
If you're familiar with the Schlage AL Series, the ALX is the evolved replacement. The hardware itself got stronger- stainless steel latchbolt, deep-drawn spindles with 5 points of lever engagement, Grade 1 compression springs that prevent lever droop and wobble over time. The chassis design is what changed most fundamentally. It's a single patent-pending chassis that supports most functions and all cylinder applications, meaning the same chassis body can be reconfigured in the field for different functions by swapping kits rather than replacing the entire lock.
For the ALX10 passage function, there's no cylinder involved, so the chassis modularity matters less at time of purchase. It matters if a future building renovation changes the function requirement- the chassis stays, and the function or lever kit gets swapped.
VandlGard: What It Does and Why It's Field Selectable
VandlGard is a Schlage feature built into every ALX Series lock with a locking function. On a keyed ALX, when the outside lever is locked, it doesn't just go rigid- it rotates freely up and down. There's no resistance to force in either direction. That freewheeling action prevents a vandal from applying leverage to the chassis, because there's nothing to push or pull against. The mechanical linkage simply disconnects.
On the ALX10 passage function, both levers are always unlocked, so VandlGard doesn't engage in normal operation. The "field selectable" designation means that if this chassis were converted to a keyed function in the future, the VandlGard behavior can be configured in the field without replacing the lock.
Athens Lever
The Athens lever is a solid, arched commercial lever- 4-9/16 inches wide, 3-5/16-inch projection from the door face. It fits the full range of commercial door aesthetics and is one of the more widely specified designs in the ALX series. Milled tactile warning is available on the Athens lever for visually impaired applications- a textured surface on one or both levers alerts users to a potential hazard on the opposite side of the door, such as an exit to a parking area or loading dock.

Suiting with Schlage ND Series
The ALX Series is designed to suit with the Schlage ND Series Grade 1 cylindrical lock using matching lever designs and finishes. If a building uses ND Grade 1 on primary and high-security openings and ALX Grade 2 on interior lower-traffic openings, both series share lever styles and finish options so the hardware schedule looks consistent throughout. That suiting capability is a practical advantage on large commercial projects where hardware specification depth varies by opening.
American Locksets stocks the Schlage ALX10 ATH and the full ALX Series lever and function range.
