About this item
The Schlage Electronics 623GID-EX is a 1-5/8-inch glow-in-the-dark mushroom push-to-exit button from Schlage's 620 Series pushbutton platform. If you searched "schlage push button"-this is Schlage's commercial push-to-exit button used in access-controlled door systems to let people exit through an electrically secured door without a credential. Press the button, the contact triggers the access controller or electric strike/maglock to release the door, door opens. The 623GID-EX is also sold under the Locknetics brand name, which is the legacy Schlage Electronics label still referenced in some project specs and distributor catalogs.
Decoding the 623GID-EX Model Code
Every position in the Schlage pushbutton model code is a configuration decision. 623 = the 620 Series model with a 1-5/8-inch mushroom button on a single gang plate. GID = glow-in-the-dark button material-the mushroom cone absorbs ambient light and glows in low-light or dark conditions without requiring any power to the button itself. EX = the button is engraved with the words PUSH TO EXIT.
If you change the button designation, you get a different product. GID without EX = glow-in-the-dark button with no engraving. RD-EX = red button with PUSH TO EXIT. GR-EX = green button. GID-H = glow-in-the-dark with handicapped symbol. The 623GID-EX is specifically glow-in-the-dark plus PUSH TO EXIT engraving-the most commonly specified push-to-exit button for commercial egress control applications.
Mushroom Button Size: 621 vs 623 vs 625
Schlage makes three mushroom button sizes in the 620 Series. The 621 is the smallest at 1-1/4-inch diameter-used in tight installations or where a lower-profile button is preferred. The 623 is mid-size at 1-5/8-inch diameter-the standard specification for most commercial access control push-to-exit applications. The 625 is the largest at 2-3/4-inch diameter for high-traffic or ADA-highlighted locations where a larger target is needed. The 623GID-EX is the 1-5/8-inch version. All three share the same plate and wiring options.
Single Gang Plate, Screw Terminal Wiring
The 623GID-EX mounts on a standard single gang electrical box. The plate is a standard gang plate size, which means it drops into any single gang wall box without additional hardware. Wiring connects via screw terminals on the back of the unit for momentary action models-no punch-down blocks, no proprietary connectors. Screw terminals are faster to wire and more reliable over time than push-in connections in commercial installations.
The standard 623GID-EX has a Single Pole Single Throw (SPDT) momentary contact output-the contact closes or opens when the button is pressed and returns when released. For applications requiring two independent circuits to trigger simultaneously (dual relay controllers, monitor loops), the DP option (Double Pole Double Throw) is available as a suffix.
Options and Variants
Delayed action variant (DA suffix) provides a 0 to 60 second adjustable timed output-the contact stays active after the button is released for the set duration. Useful for doors on longer egress paths where the door needs to stay unlocked for several seconds after the button press.
Narrow stile variant (NS suffix) uses a narrower plate for aluminum storefront doors with narrow vertical stiles where a standard single gang plate won't fit cleanly.
The L2/ILL optional PC board installs inside the button cone to add LED backlit illumination with green and red status indication-useful for visual feedback in access control applications where the button needs to show door status.
