About this item
The Schlage 679-05HM is a concealed magnetic door position switch built for hollow metal doors and frames. It tells your access control panel, alarm system, or building management system whether a door is open or closed- nothing more, nothing less. Simple concept, but the execution has to be right or you end up with nuisance alarms, missed alerts, and frustrated facility managers.
The switch mortises into the door edge. The magnet mortises into the frame directly across from it. When the door closes and the two components line up, the magnet activates the reed switch inside the housing and the circuit changes state. Open the door, the magnet moves away, the circuit flips back. Your panel sees the change and acts on it- forced door alarm, propped door notification, door status log, whatever your system is set up to do.
Why the HM Suffix Is Not Just a Catalog Detail
Schlage makes the 679-05 series for different door constructions and the variant matters for fit. The HM is calibrated for hollow metal door edge profiles- the geometry of the housing and the gap tolerance between switch and magnet are set for steel door construction. The 679-05WD is the version for wood doors, different dimensions entirely. Ordering the wrong one means the switch and magnet won't line up correctly at the door edge, and you'll get inconsistent operation- sometimes it reads closed when the door's open, sometimes it doesn't register at all. If your project is hollow metal, the 05HM is what you want.
What SPDT Actually Means for Your Wiring
SPDT is Single Pole Double Throw. The switch has one common terminal and two outputs- one Normally Open, one Normally Closed. That gives you options. Some access control panels and alarm panels supervise the Normally Closed circuit and expect a break when the door opens. Others monitor the Normally Open circuit and expect a make. With an SPDT switch, you wire to whichever matches your panel without sourcing a different product. Both outputs are live, same switch, same installation.
That also means if you ever change panel brands or retrofit this into an existing system with a different supervision style, you don't have to pull the switch. Just change which terminal you're wired to.
The Template Question
"679-05hm template" is one of the most searched terms for this product because installers want to confirm the door and frame prep dimensions before they start cutting. The switch housing is 3/4 inch diameter concealed into the door edge. Schlage's installation instruction sheet covers both the switch prep and the magnet prep with exact depth and location dimensions. Pull the Schlage 679 Door Switch Installation Instructions from Schlage's documentation before you start cutting- it's the single-page template that covers everything.
