What "Interconnected" Means and Why It Matters
An interconnected lock combines a deadbolt and a latch into one unit where a single inside lever action releases both. That's what separates the S251PD from a standard entry knob-with-deadbolt combination. With two separate locks, someone exiting under emergency conditions has to retract the deadbolt and turn the knob or lever separately two motions, two steps. With the S251PD, turning the inside Flair lever retracts the deadbolt and the latch in one motion. Immediately. No separate turn knob, no second step.
This is what Life Safety codes are increasingly requiring on residential and small commercial entrance doors: single-motion egress. The S200 Series is designed specifically around this requirement.
How the S251PD Double Locking Function Works
Outside operation: the deadbolt throws and retracts by key. The latch automatically deadlocks every time the door closes; it doesn't stay retracted after you turn the lever. The outside lever is unlocked by key when the inside turn button is engaged.
Inside operation: the deadbolt is controlled by a turn knob. The latch is controlled by a turn button. Either can be locked independently. But when you turn the inside Flair lever, both retract simultaneously. Exit doesn't require unlocking anything first.
This is the correct function for exterior entrance doors in multifamily residential, military housing, small hotel and motel buildings, and any single-door residential application where both deadbolt security and Life Safety egress compliance are required.
The Flair Lever: Ordering Handing Correctly
The Flair lever is the one design in the S200 Series that is handed. Every other lever style in the S200 line Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune is non-handed and installed without specifying direction. Flair is different. You need to specify right-hand (RH) or left-hand (LH) at time of order. Installing a right-hand Flair lever on a left-hand door means the lever curves away from the door, not toward it. It'll function mechanically but it will look wrong and the lever geometry won't match the door swing.
To determine your handing: stand on the outside of the door. If the hinges are on your left and the door swings away from you, it's a right-hand door. If hinges are on your right, it's a left-hand door.
For french door pairs, each active door leaf gets its own handed cylinder specifying RH for one and LH for the other leaf.
