About this item
The Trimco 5001 is a wrought stainless steel lock astragal from Trimco's 5000 series, measuring 9-1/2 inches in overall length with a 1-1/2-inch face width. It fits both mortise and cylindrical locks and installs non-handed, meaning the same part works on left and right hand doors. If you've been searching for "5001x" or the "Trimco 5001X" variant, you're looking at the same 5001 series- the X designation refers to the cylindrical lock configuration within this product family, covering the standard mounting dimensions for cylindrical lock preparations rather than mortise.
What a Lock Astragal Is and When You Need One
A lock astragal is a formed metal strip that mounts at the strike side of a door to cover the gap between the door edge and the frame at the lock area. On most commercial doors, that gap exposes the latch or bolt to view and potential manipulation. The lock astragal closes that gap with a rigid metal profile, making it harder to probe or attack the latch through the door edge clearance.
Beyond security, lock astragals give the door edge a finished, professional appearance on high-visibility openings- healthcare, education, hospitality, and office buildings where exposed latch gaps would look unfinished against architectural specifications. The 5001 does both jobs without requiring any modification to the lock or the door prep. It mounts as a surface-applied addition.
Wrought vs Cast: Which One Is the 5001?
Trimco's 5000 series includes both wrought and cast astragal options, and the distinction matters in practice. The 5001 is wrought- it's formed from flat sheet stock rather than being cast in a mold. Wrought astragals are thinner in profile, lighter, and easier to install on standard commercial door edges. The cast alternative in this series (the 5000-T) has a heavier, thicker profile suited for applications where additional mass and rigidity are required. For standard commercial mortise and cylindrical lock applications, the wrought 5001 is the right choice.
Dimensions and Mounting
The 5001 is 9-1/2 inches long and 1-1/2 inches wide. The material is 13 gauge steel with a satin stainless steel finish (630/US32D). Two center-to-center mounting hole distances are available- 6-1/2 inches and 8-1/2 inches- which accommodate different lock and door edge configurations without requiring custom drilling. The non-handed design means no handing specification at the time of order. It works as-received on left or right swing doors and installs using standard fasteners.
Compatible Lock Types and Applications
The Trimco 5001 works with both mortise lock preparations and cylindrical lock preparations. On a mortise lock door, it covers the 8-inch face pocket area and the gap at the latch edge. On a cylindrical lock door, it bridges the latch bolt cutout and the surrounding door edge gap. Compatible applications include offices, schools, hospitals, public buildings, and retail stores- the same commercial building types Trimco designs for across their full hardware line.
