About this item
The Von Duprin 6211 is a heavy-duty Grade 1 electric strike from Von Duprin's 6200 Series designed for mortise locks without a deadbolt and cylindrical locks on single doors, 4-7/8" x 1-1/4" centered faceplate, 1,500 lb static holding strength, 70 ft-lbs dynamic impact strength, field selectable fail safe or fail secure, and UL 10C listed for fire-rated openings. What the 6211 Is and What It Does
An electric strike replaces the standard fixed strike plate in the door frame. Instead of a rigid lip that always accepts the latchbolt, the 6211 has a movable lip (the keeper) that releases on command from an access control system, keypad, card reader, or receptionist button. When the keeper releases, the latchbolt can ride up over it and the door opens with a pull. No one needs to retract the latch, and no key is needed from outside for entry.
The 6211 specifically handles mortise locks without a deadbolt and cylindrical locks. That distinction matters. If your mortise lock has an active deadbolt, you need the 6210, not the 6211. The 6211's keeper geometry accommodates the springlatch not the deadbolt throw and strike pocket inserts are provided in the box to accommodate different manufacturers' deadlocking trigger locations.
Fail Safe vs Fail Secure: Choosing the Right 6211
Fail Secure (FSE): The default condition is the keeper lip is locked when the strike has no power. Apply voltage and the lip releases for entry. On power failure, the door stays locked. This is the correct specification for perimeter security doors, server rooms, and any opening where uncontrolled access during a power failure is unacceptable. The FSE version is fire-rated.
Fail Safe (FS): Power holds the lip locked. Lose power and the lip releases, allowing free entry. This is the correct specification for egress-critical paths, stairwells, main exits, and any door where free exit during a fire alarm or power outage is required by code. The FS version is not fire-rated and should not be installed on fire-rated openings.
The 6211 Template and Door Prep
The 6211 uses Von Duprin template 30215_b (Mortise/Cylinder Single Door Application, dated 08-29-16), available for download from Von Duprin's Allegion documentation library. The frame cutout accommodates the 4-7/8" x 1-1/4" faceplate with a 3-3/8" ramp cutout and 1-11/16" backbox depth. Installation uses two #12-24 machine screws. Target clearance between the latchbolt and the strike lip is 1/32" the 6211's adjustable backbox compensates for minor misalignment between door and frame without requiring frame modification.
Four installation notes from the official template that every installer needs to confirm before specifying: deadlatch function is not guaranteed on cylindrical applications; door position monitoring can be affected by door/frame preparation; signal tripper function with 3/8" throw bolts is not recommended; no deadbolt action is available for mortise applications.
The 6211 retrofits the Von Duprin 3140 and the Folger Adams 712 electric strike directly, making it the standard upgrade path for buildings with older Von Duprin hardware still installed in frames.
