About this item
The Von Duprin 6211AL is a Grade 1 electric strike from Von Duprin's 6200 Series, designed specifically for aluminum frame applications with mortise locks (without deadbolt) or cylindrical locks on single doors. If you've been searching "von duprin 6211", "6211 electric strike", "6211 von duprin", or "von duprin 6200" - the model code tells you everything: 6211 = the 6200 Series strike configured for mortise-without-deadbolt and cylindrical lock applications. AL = aluminum frame. The 6211WF is the wood frame version. The 6211 without a suffix is the hollow metal frame version. Frame type determines which variant you need - the strike body is sized and shaped to the frame material.
How the 6211AL Works at the Door
An electric strike replaces the standard fixed strike plate in the frame. Instead of a rigid keeper that the latchbolt seats into when the door closes, the 6211AL uses a movable keeper lip controlled by a solenoid. When the strike is energized to release, the keeper pivots, the latchbolt passes through without needing to retract from inside the lock, and the door opens. The person pulling from outside never touches the lock mechanism at all.
The latchbolt on the lockset still does its job - it holds the door closed mechanically. The electric strike just controls whether that latch can be released from the pull side without a key or credential. That's why electric strikes are specified for access-controlled entry points where credential readers (card, keypad, fob, mobile) need to release the door remotely.
Fail Secure Standard - What That Means for Your Project
The 6211AL ships standard as fail secure. Fail secure means the solenoid requires power to unlock the keeper. When power is removed - during an outage, fire alarm trigger, or panel failure - the strike stays locked. Nobody gets through from outside without a credential. This is the correct specification for most commercial access-controlled doors where unauthorized entry during a power interruption would be a security problem.
Fail safe is available as a factory option. Fail safe means the strike unlocks when power is removed. This configuration is used on egress paths where fire code requires the door to be freely openable during a fire alarm, even from outside. Building codes prohibit fail-safe strikes on fire-labeled openings. If your opening requires fail safe, specify it at order - the 6211AL is field convertible between fail secure and fail safe with the appropriate parts kit, but it's cleaner to specify correctly from the factory.
Voltage and AC Options
The 6211AL operates on 24VDC standard. 12VDC operation is available as an option. For AC power supplies, the SO12 and SO24 rectifier kits convert 12VAC or 24VAC respectively to the DC voltage the solenoid requires - these are field installable and plug in-line to the solenoid wire.
Dual Monitor Switches and Entry Buzzer Options
The DS option adds dual switch monitoring - two SPDT contacts, one monitoring whether the latchbolt is seated in the strike pocket (tripper switch) and one monitoring whether the keeper lip is open or closed. These signals feed back to the access control panel for door position monitoring and alarm conditions. The DS-LC variant uses low-voltage gold contacts for computer control applications under 50 milliamps. The EB entry buzzer option installs in the frame in parallel with the strike circuit and sounds when the strike is released - useful for applications where audible confirmation of entry is required.
Physical Specs and Installation Notes
The 6211AL accepts a 3/4-inch latchbolt throw. The strike box is horizontally adjustable to compensate for door or frame misalignment. Non-handed. Tested to over 250,000 cycles. Holding strength is 1,500 lbs. Impact strength is 70 lbs. Two-piece plug connectors are included for ease of installation and servicing. Strike pocket inserts are provided to accommodate different manufacturers' deadlocking trigger locations.
