The Von Duprin KR4854 is the keyed removable electrified steel mullion prepped for one 299 mechanical rim strike and one 6111 electric strike. It's the specified mullion for paired doors running Von Duprin 98 or 99 Series rim exit devices where access control through the electric strike is required, and where the full opening needs to be clearable by key when moving equipment, furniture, or in emergency situations.
KR4854 vs 4854 vs 4954: Getting the Right Part
These three model numbers confuse more orders than almost any other Von Duprin mullion spec. Here's the plain breakdown.
The 4954 is the standard non-electrified removable steel mullion prepped for two 264 or 299 mechanical strikes. No electric strike prep. Use it when you need a removable mullion and no electric access control is required on the opening.
The 4854 is the electrified version, prepped for one 299 mechanical strike on one door and one 6111 electric strike on the other door. The 6111 provides powered access control. The 4854 is the non-keyed version, meaning the mullion is removed manually. The KR4854 adds the keyed removable mechanism, so one turn of a mortise cylinder releases the mullion for removal in a single operation.
If your spec says "von duprin 4954" but your door schedule shows an electric strike, you need the 4854 or KR4854, not the 4954.
Why the KR4854 is Handed and Why That Matters
The 4854 and KR4854 are handed. This is not optional and cannot be reversed in the field. The 6111 electric strike is mounted in a fixed position within the mullion body based on which door leaf needs controlled access. You must specify Right Hand Reverse (RHR) or Left Hand Reverse (LHR) when ordering. The non-electrified 4954 is non-handed. If you order the wrong hand, the electric strike will be on the wrong leaf and the door set won't function as designed.
Keyed Removable Mechanism and Cylinder
The KR prefix means a single key operation releases the mullion. Turning the correct mortise cylinder key releases the locking mechanism and allows the mullion to be lifted free of its floor and head fittings. Large equipment, furniture, or wide loads can then pass through the full opening without any center post obstruction. When the mullion is reinstalled, it auto-relocks without using the key again. The key is only needed for removal.
The KR4854 requires a 1-1/4" mortise cylinder with a straight cam. Schlage cam reference B502-191 for compatible straight cam identification. The cylinder is sold separately and is not included with the mullion.
6111 Electric Strike Quick Connector
The KR4854 includes a factory-installed quick connector that routes the 6111 electric strike wiring from the mullion body through the top fitting to the frame. This eliminates the need to thread wires through the mullion body during installation. The wiring connection between mullion and frame is made at the top fitting quick connector, which disconnects cleanly when the mullion is removed and reconnects when it's reinstalled.
Available Lengths and Storage
The KR4854 is available in 7'6", 8'6", and 10'6" lengths. These KR lengths are 4 inches longer than the corresponding non-KR 4854 lengths (7'2", 8'2", 10'2") to account for the keyed mechanism hardware at the top and bottom. The Von Duprin MT54 wall-mounted storage kit is available separately to provide a dedicated storage bracket for the removed mullion.
Not fire rated. For fire-rated electrified mullion applications on Von Duprin fire exit rim devices, specify the KR9854 series.
