About this item
The Accentra 691F is the fail secure electrified lever trim from the 600 Series Heavy Duty Electric Trim line, designed for use with Accentra (Yale) 2100, 6000, and 7000 Series exit devices. It provides electrically controlled outside lever access with always-free inside egress, making it the correct specification for high-security applications where the outside lever must remain locked unless access is electrically granted. If you've been searching for "691f," "yale 691f," or an electrified panic device trim with fail secure operation, this is the product. Yale commercial hardware is now branded as Accentra, an ASSA ABLOY company, effective June 2023.
691F Fail Secure vs 690F Fail Safe: The Critical Distinction
The 690F and 691F are otherwise identical trim assemblies with one operating difference that determines which one to specify.
The 690F is fail safe. When power is removed from the trim, the outside lever unlocks automatically. Fail safe is specified where life safety egress from outside the door (re-entry from stairs, for example) must be preserved during power failures or fire alarm activation.
The 691F is fail secure. When power is removed, the outside lever locks and remains locked. Only restoring power or using the mechanical key override allows entry. Fail secure is specified on high-security doors where the locked state must be maintained even during a power outage: data centers, pharmacies, secure server rooms, evidence storage, and detention-adjacent spaces.
How the 691F Fail Secure Trim Operates
When power is off: the outside lever is locked and Free-Wheeling. The Free-Wheeling mechanism allows the lever to rotate freely in the locked position, which eliminates the lever as a mechanical advantage point for forced entry. An attacker cannot grip the lever and apply rotational force to the mechanism because the lever disengages from the drive. This is a security feature, not a malfunction.
When power is applied: the outside lever engages the mechanism and can retract the latchbolt to allow entry.
Inside device: the pushpad or inside lever on the exit device is always active and always allows egress regardless of the electrical state. Power failure does not affect interior egress in either direction.
Mechanical Key Override: Function 09
The 691F includes a mechanical key override using the Function 09 operation. Turning the key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt, allowing entry without requiring electrical power. The key can only be removed from the cylinder when the lever is in the locked position. This prevents the key from being left in the unlocked state and bypassing the electrical control.
Compatible Exit Device Series and Wiring
The 691F is designed for Accentra 2100, 6000 (6000F fire-rated), and 7000 Series exit devices. Wiring method differs by series. For 7000 Series, if the door does not have a pre-installed wire raceway, the exit device body itself is used as the wire raceway and a wire access hole must be prepared in the door. For 2100F and 6000F series, a wire raceway must be provided in the door and a wire access hole should not be prepared. Confirm the device series and door prep before installation.
The 691F ships with a plug connector and 4-foot wire lead. New construction pre-wired doors include a raceway harness with 8-pin and 4-pin connectors. Cylinder is available with 2109 Standard Schlage C keyway or SFIC (Small Format Interchangeable Core) prep for Best, Arrow, or Falcon keyway systems (sold less core on SFIC option). Accepts all standard Accentra lever designs and Reflections decorative lever styles.
