About this item
The Accentra 8891FL, also known as the Yale 8891FL, is a fail secure electrified mortise lock body designed for access-controlled commercial openings where the door must default to locked when power is removed. It's part of the Yale 8800 series, one of the most widely specified electrified mortise lock families in North American commercial construction, covering applications from office and laboratory doors to stair tower entries, elevator lobbies, pharmaceutical storage rooms, and hospital equipment rooms. This listing is for the lock body only. Trim, lever, and cylinder are ordered separately.
Fail Secure Operation: What 8891FL Means and When to Use It
Fail secure means the lock behaves exactly as the name says — it defaults to secured when power is lost. When power is off, the outside lever is locked and the door cannot be opened from outside without a mechanical key. When power is on, the outside lever is active and operates the latch normally. The inside lever is always free regardless of power state, which maintains egress compliance at all times.
This is the correct choice for pharmaceutical storage rooms, server rooms, laboratories, cash handling areas, stair towers, and any opening where unauthorized access during a power failure would be a security risk. If your application requires the door to default to unlocked during a power failure, such as a fire egress path, you need the 8890FL (fail safe) instead. Getting this right before ordering matters because the lock body cannot be converted between fail safe and fail secure in the field.
8891FL vs 8891-2: Understanding the Variant Codes
The standard 8891FL is the electrified deadlocking latchbolt function. The 8891-2 designation refers to a specific trim and function configuration within the 8800 series. When specifying the body only, the base model is 8891FL. The "-2" suffix is used when ordering the complete lockset with a specific outside lever configuration. If you are ordering the body only to retrofit into an existing 8800 series installation or to add trim separately, the LBDY8891FL is the correct body-only SKU.
Electrical Specifications and Power Requirements
The 8891FL body operates on 12VDC or 24VDC regulated and filtered power. At 12VDC the current draw is 500mA. At 24VDC the current draw is 240mA. The voltage must not vary beyond plus or minus 10% of the rated voltage or the solenoid may be damaged. A bridge rectifier is integrated inside the lock body, which means the lock accepts both AC and DC input without an external rectifier. The solenoid is continuous duty, meaning it can remain energized continuously without overheating under normal operating conditions. Yale electrified 8800 locks use the ElectroLynx connector system for wiring through the door hinge, compatible with McKinney ElectroLynx hinges.
Monitoring Options
The 8891FL body supports the following monitoring add-ons, specified at time of order. REX (Request to Exit) is an SPDT switch that detects activation of the inside free lever and sends a signal to the access control panel to shunt door alarms during authorized egress. LBM (Latchbolt Monitor) reports latchbolt position. DBM (Deadbolt Monitor) reports deadbolt position. ITS (Integrated Total Security) combines REX, Lock Performance Monitoring, Door Position Status, and Cylinder Monitoring into a single monitoring package, available exclusively on the 8890FL and 8891FL functions. All monitoring switches are rated at 2 Amp at 30VDC and 3 Amp at 125VAC.
Body Only: What You Need to Order Separately
This product is the lock body with the integrated solenoid only. It does not include a lever, rose, cylinder, or trim. It works with levers only — knobs are not compatible with the 8891FL body. You will need to separately specify a trim set from the Yale 8800 series trim catalog, a cylinder (standard, SFIC, LFIC, or less cylinder depending on your key system), and a lever design. The standard door thickness is 1-3/4 inches. For other thicknesses up to 3-1/4 inches, specify the door thickness on the order.
