About this item
The Schlage L9070 is the classroom function in Schlage's L-Series heavy-duty mortise lock line. ANSI function F05 in Schlage's notation - outside lever is normally locked, key from outside temporarily unlocks it for entry, and the inside lever is always free for egress. That's exactly what a classroom door needs: a teacher can lock out the hallway without leaving the room, and students always get out in an emergency.
The "06" in this listing is the lever style. The 06A, 06B, 06N, and 06L are all the same lever profile with different trim configurations - A for sectional rose, B for narrow sectional rose, N for standard N escutcheon, and L for L escutcheon.
How the L9070 Classroom Function Works
The outside lever on the L9070 is always locked. It doesn't freewheel - it just doesn't operate the latch unless a key has been inserted and turned. A key from outside temporarily retracts the latch for entry, then the outside lever re-locks automatically when the key is removed. The person inside doesn't have to do anything.
The inside lever is always free. No thumbturn, no key required from inside. That's the critical life-safety distinction that separates a classroom function from a storeroom: a storeroom requires a key to exit, a classroom never does.
This is why the L9070 shows up on virtually every K-12, university, and healthcare hardware schedule for office and classroom doors. It gives the occupant inside full lockout capability without any additional hardware, without leaving the door, and without compromising egress.
L9070 vs L9050 vs L9080: Getting the Function Right
The L9050 (F04 office/inner entry) has a thumbturn inside that the occupant uses to lock or unlock the outside lever. There's also a key on the outside. Both the thumbturn and the outside key give full control over locking. That's the right choice for private offices where the occupant needs deliberate control.
The L9070 (F05 classroom) skips the thumbturn entirely. The outside is always locked. Key from outside is the only way in. Inside is always free. Simpler, more secure for high-traffic institutional spaces.
The L9080 (F07) adds a deadbolt to the latch - two separate bolts in the same case. Specify that when the door needs independent deadbolt security in addition to the latch.
