About this item
The Schlage L9453 is the full entrance function mortise lock from the L9000 Series, specified here with the 06 lever design. If you searched "l9453", "schlage l9453", "schlage ff mortise lock", "schlage l9453 mortise lock", "l9453 schlage", or "schlage l9453 template"-the L9453 is ANSI Function F20. It's the entrance function that gives you a latchbolt, a deadbolt, and a single thumbturn that controls both. "FF" in commercial hardware shorthand stands for full function-meaning both sides operate the latch freely when unlocked, and the deadbolt is built into the same case. The L9453 is that lock.
ANSI F20: One Thumbturn Does Three Different Things
The L9453's thumbturn is the key to understanding this lock, and it's what every competitor page skips over. The thumbturn has three distinct positions, each doing something different.
At the vertical rest position, both levers freely retract the latch from either side. Normal passage-lever down, door opens, no credential needed from either direction.
Rotate the thumbturn 20 degrees and the outside lever locks out. It turns freely but doesn't retract the latch. From outside, only a key works. From inside, the lever still retracts the latch and releases the thumbturn back to vertical in the same action.
Rotate the thumbturn 90 degrees and the deadbolt extends. When you throw the deadbolt, the outside lever automatically locks at the same time-you don't have to separately lock the lever. From inside, a single lever turn retracts both the deadbolt and the latchbolt simultaneously. One motion, both bolts pull back, door opens. From outside, a key does the same thing-retracts both bolts in one turn.
That simultaneous inside retraction is what separates the L9453 from most other deadbolt-equipped mortise locks. You don't retract the deadbolt and then separately open the latch. The inside lever handles everything at once.
L9453 vs L9050: Why the Function Distinction Matters
Both the L9453 and L9050 are entrance functions with deadbolts. People confuse them constantly. On the L9050, the deadbolt and latch are controlled by separate motions-the thumbturn controls the lever lockout, and a separate deadbolt turn is manual. On the L9453, the inside lever retracts both bolts together. For main building entrances, lobby doors, or any high-traffic door where fast single-action exit is a requirement, L9453 is the correct call.
Template Information for Installers
If you searched "schlage l9453 template"-the L9453 uses the standard L9000 Series mortise pocket preparation. Case size is 4-7/16 inches by 6-1/16 inches by 1 inch. Standard backset is 2-3/4 inches. Lever center to cylinder center is 3-7/8 inches. Lever center to thumbturn hub center is 2-11/16 inches. The armored front is 1-1/4 inches by 8 inches by 7/32 inches. Templates are available in Schlage's commercial documentation library and ship with the lock. Floating mounting tabs adjust automatically to beveled door edges.
The L9453P also carries a UL bullet-resistant listing at Levels 1, 2, and 3 when installed with other rated products in a bullet-resistant assembly-a specification note absent from every competitor page.
