About this item
The Adams Rite MS1850S is the industry-standard deadlock for narrow stile aluminum swinging doors. If you searched "adams rite ms1850s template", "ms1850s", "adams rite ms1850s", or "adams rite ms1850"-this is the lock. The MS1850S has been the go-to deadlock for aluminum storefront and commercial glass doors since Adams Rite introduced it. It's specified on more narrow stile aluminum door installations than any other deadlock in commercial construction, and for good reason-the bolt construction, locking geometry, and backset flexibility cover nearly every aluminum door application you'll encounter.
What MS Locking Means and Why It Matters
MS stands for Maximum Security. It refers to the over-center locking geometry of the bolt mechanism. When the bolt is in the locked position, the pivot mechanism passes over center-meaning the bolt is geometrically locked in position without relying on spring tension alone. Forced entry attempts that try to push, pull, pry, or spread the door away from the jamb don't compress or retract the bolt. The over-center position makes the bolt mechanically resist those forces rather than just resisting them through friction or spring load. That's why the MS1850S holds on tall, flexible aluminum doors where the door itself may deflect under forced entry pressure.
The Bolt: Eight Ply, Ceramic Core, 1-3/8-Inch Throw
The bolt is eight-ply laminated stainless steel. The center ply contains an alumina-ceramic core. Ceramic defeats hacksaw attacks-standard hacksaws and rod-type super hacksaws designed to cut through steel stall on alumina-ceramic. The bolt measures 5/8 inch by 1-3/8 inches by 2-7/8 inches with a 1-3/8-inch throw. That nearly 3-inch overall bolt length is what sets the MS1850S apart from standard deadbolts. A standard deadbolt throws 1 inch into the strike. The MS1850S bolt is nearly three times that length, which means even on a door with a larger-than-normal gap between door edge and jamb, the bolt still engages the strike with substantial overlap.
Template and Door Prep Information
If you searched "adams rite ms1850s template"-here's what installers need. The lock case measures 1 inch by 6 inches, with depth varying by backset. The faceplate on this version is flat, measuring 1 inch by 6-7/8 inches. Four backsets are available: 7/8 inch, 31/32 inch, 1-1/8 inch, and 1-1/2 inch. The lock accepts any standard 1-inch length, 1-5/32-inch diameter mortise cylinder with MS cam-the Adams Rite 4036 Mortise Cylinder or equivalent. The 4066 Thumbturn is the inside operator option. Cylinder and thumbturn are not included. The lock accepts cylinder from either or both sides.
Flat vs Radius vs Weatherstrip Faceplate
The MS1850S designation covers the flat faceplate version. Flat is for aluminum doors with a square stile face-the faceplate sits flush against a flat door edge. Radius faceplate (MS1851S) is for doors with a curved stile profile. Radius with weatherstrip (MS1851SW) adds a non-removable seal for exterior applications. Bevel faceplate (MS1852S) handles angled stile faces. Confirm your door stile profile before ordering-wrong faceplate means gaps at the door edge and potential leaks on exterior doors.
MS1850S vs MS1850S-X5X vs 1850S-X2X
Three bolt configurations exist under the MS1850S family. The standard MS1850S has the straight bolt-1-3/8-inch throw-for single-leaf swinging doors. The MS1850S-X5X has a hookbolt for sliding narrow stile aluminum doors-the hook shape resists the parting motion of sliding door and jamb, where a straight bolt would simply slide out of the strike. The 1850S-X2X is the short throw version-same straight bolt, 13/16-inch throw-for applications where space behind the jamb is limited. All three use the same case and faceplate dimensions.
