About this item
The BEST 40HST1 is the standard strike package for the BEST 40H Series heavy-duty mortise lock - a three-component kit containing the 40HS1 universal strike, a plastic universal strike box, and a strike screw, designed for standard ANSI A115.1 door frame preparations. If you searched "best 40h", "best 40h series", or "strike packages" - this is the product.
What the 40HST1 Is and When You Order It
The BEST 40H is a heavy-duty mortise lock with a modular ordering system. Instead of ordering one complete pre-configured lock, you can order the lock in three separate kits that combine into a complete assembly: a case, an inside trim kit, and an outside trim kit. The strike package is an optional fourth component - it provides the door frame hardware that the latchbolt and deadbolt engage when the door closes.
The 40HST1 is the strike kit for standard installations - the one you order when the door frame is a typical commercial hollow metal or wood frame with the standard ANSI A115.1 strike pocket preparation and no unusual geometry.
You need to order the 40HST1 separately when you're buying the lock case only (40H Case Only order method) or when you need a replacement strike for an existing 40H installation. If you're ordering a complete 40H lock in the traditional function-specific configuration, the strike is already included. The 40HST1 is for modular kit orders and replacement scenarios.
Three Components in the Kit
Every competitor page lists "standard kit" without telling you what's actually in the box. Here is the complete contents:
40HS1 Universal Strike: The strike plate itself. 4-7/8 inches high by 1-1/4 inches wide by 3/32 inch thick. Non-handed - it works on right-hand and left-hand doors without modification. Curved lip design with 1-1/4-inch lip-to-center measurement. The curved lip is the bent portion of the strike that guides the latchbolt smoothly into the strike pocket as the door swings closed. The 1-1/4-inch lip-to-center dimension positions the bolt pockets at the correct height relative to the door frame edge for the 40H case's standard backset.
Universal Strike Box: A plastic dust-proof box that installs in the strike pocket behind the strike plate. The strike box prevents debris accumulation in the mortise pocket, protects the bolt tips from bottoming out against raw frame material, and provides a consistent landing surface for the latchbolt and deadbolt. Plastic strike boxes also protect stainless steel bolt tips from premature wear - softer material at the contact point extends bolt life in high-cycle applications.
Strike Screw: One #12-12 x 3/4-inch PHFH (pan head flat head) fastener for securing the strike to the door frame.
"Best 40H" and "Best 40H Series": The Lock This Strike Is For
If you searched "best 40h" or "best 40h series" - the BEST 40H is BEST's heavy-duty commercial mortise lock platform. It has been the institutional specification standard for schools, hospitals, government buildings, and commercial campuses for decades.
The 40H uses a universal case design - the same case body can be configured into over 12 common mortise lock functions by rearranging internal components, often without disassembling the case. The case is 0.095-inch cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating for corrosion protection, and dimensions of 5-7/8 inches high by 4-1/16 inches wide by 7/8 inches deep.
The latchbolt is solid stainless steel with a 3/4-inch throw and an oil-impregnated anti-friction design. The solid one-piece construction provides 50% more surface contact with the strike than a two-piece latch, extending cycle life. The latch is reversible without opening the case - handing changes are tool-free.
The deadbolt is stainless steel with a 1-inch throw. The armored front completely surrounds both the latch and deadbolt, providing lateral strength and self-aligning with the door bevel during installation.
"Strike Packages": The Three 40H Options
The 40H has three strike package options. Selecting the wrong one is the most common installation error on 40H modular orders:
40HST1 - Standard (this listing): The S1 strike plate and universal box. Correct for standard door functions where both the latch AND deadbolt use the same combined strike. The standard kit covers most 40H applications - passage, office, classroom, storeroom, and similar functions where the strike serves both bolts.
40HST6 - Latchbolt Only: A strike and box configured for latchbolt engagement only - no deadbolt pocket. Used when the 40H is configured for passage function or any function where no deadbolt is present in the case.
40HST6 - Latchbolt/Deadbolt: A separate dedicated strike covering the latchbolt and deadbolt in separate pockets rather than a combined strike. Used when the door prep or frame condition requires separate bolt-specific strikes.
Finish Options
The 40HST1 is available in seven finishes to match the door hardware schedule: 605 (bright brass), 606 (satin brass), 612 (satin bronze), 613 (dark bronze oil rubbed), 622 (antique nickel), 625 (bright chrome), and 626 (satin chrome). Specify the finish suffix when ordering - for example, 40HST1626 for satin chrome.
Security head screws (SH option) are available for applications where tamper-resistant fasteners are required. Thick door configuration is available for doors thicker than the standard 1-3/4-inch specification.
